2025-02-05smb: client: don't trust DFSREF_STORAGE_SERVER bitPaulo Alcantara
Some servers don't respect the DFSREF_STORAGE_SERVER bit, so unconditionally tree connect to DFS link target and then decide whether or not continue chasing DFS referrals for DFS interlinks. Otherwise the client would fail to mount such shares. Signed-off-by: Paulo Alcantara (Red Hat) <pc@manguebit.com> Signed-off-by: Steve French <stfrench@microsoft.com>
2025-01-19smb: client: optimize referral walk on failed link targetsPaulo Alcantara
If a link referral request sent to root server was successful but client failed to connect to all link targets, there is no need to retry same link referral on a different root server. Set an end marker for the DFS root referral so the client will not attempt to re-send link referrals to different root servers on failures. 2025-01-19smb: client: provide dns_resolve_{unc,name} helpersPaulo Alcantara
Some places pass hostnames rather than UNC paths to resolve them to ip addresses, so provide helpers to handle both cases and then stop converting hostnames to UNC paths by inserting path delimiters into them. Also kill @expiry parameter as it's not used anywhere. Signed-off-by: Paulo Alcantara (Red Hat) <pc@manguebit.com> Signed-off-by: Steve French <stfrench@microsoft.com>
2025-01-19smb: client: fix DFS mount against old servers with NTLMSSPPaulo Alcantara
Old Windows servers will return not fully qualified DFS targets by default as specified in MS-DFSC 3.2.5.5 Receiving a Root Referral Request or Link Referral Request | Servers SHOULD<30> return fully qualified DNS host names of | targets in responses to root referral requests and link referral | requests. | ... | <30> Section 3.2.5.5: By default, Windows Server 2003, Windows | Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, and | Windows Server 2012 R2 return DNS host names that are not fully | qualified for targets. Fix this by converting all NetBIOS host names from DFS targets to FQDNs and try resolving them first if DNS domain name was provided in NTLMSSP CHALLENGE_MESSAGE message from previous SMB2_SESSION_SETUP. This also prevents the client from translating the DFS target hostnames to another domain depending on the network domain search order. 2024-11-26smb: client: don't try following DFS links in cifs_tree_connect()Paulo Alcantara
We can't properly support chasing DFS links in cifs_tree_connect() because (1) We don't support creating new sessions while we're reconnecting, which would be required for DFS interlinks. (2) ->is_path_accessible() can't be called from cifs_tree_connect() as it would deadlock with smb2_reconnect(). This is required for checking if new DFS target is a nested DFS link. By unconditionally trying to get an DFS referral from new DFS target isn't correct because if the new DFS target (interlink) is an DFS standalone namespace, then we would end up getting -ELOOP and then potentially leaving tcon disconnected. 2024-11-26smb: client: get rid of @nlsc param in cifs_tree_connect()Paulo Alcantara
We can access local_nls directly from @tcon->ses, so there is no need to pass it as parameter in cifs_tree_connect(). Signed-off-by: Paulo Alcantara (Red Hat) <pc@manguebit.com> Signed-off-by: Steve French <stfrench@microsoft.com>
2024-09-24smb: client: fix DFS interlink failoverPaulo Alcantara
The DFS interlinks point to different DFS namespaces so make sure to use the correct DFS root server to chase any DFS links under it by storing the SMB session in dfs_ref_walk structure and then using it on every referral walk. 2024-04-02smb: client: guarantee refcounted children from parent sessionPaulo Alcantara
Avoid potential use-after-free bugs when walking DFS referrals, mounting and performing DFS failover by ensuring that all children from parent @tcon->ses are also refcounted. They're all needed across the entire DFS mount. Get rid of @tcon->dfs_ses_list while we're at it, too. 2024-02-09cifs: change tcon status when need_reconnect is set on itShyam Prasad N
When a tcon is marked for need_reconnect, the intention is to have it reconnected. This change adjusts tcon->status in cifs_tree_connect when need_reconnect is set. Also, this change has a minor correction in resetting need_reconnect on success. It makes sure that it is done with tc_lock held. 2023-11-09smb: client: fix mount when dns_resolver key is not availablePaulo Alcantara
There was a wrong assumption that with CONFIG_CIFS_DFS_UPCALL=y there would always be a dns_resolver key set up so we could unconditionally upcall to resolve UNC hostname rather than using the value provided by mount(2). Only require it when performing automount of junctions within a DFS share so users that don't have dns_resolver key still can mount their regular shares with server hostname resolved by mount.cifs(8). 2023-08-20smb: client: get rid of dfs code dep in namespace.cPaulo Alcantara
Make namespace.c being built without requiring CONFIG_CIFS_DFS_UPCALL=y by moving set_dest_addr() to dfs.c and call it at the beginning of dfs_mount_share() so it can chase the DFS link starting from the correct server in @ctx->dstaddr. 2023-08-20smb: client: ensure to try all targets when finding nested linksPaulo Alcantara
With current implementation, when a nested DFS link is found during mount(2), the client follows the referral and then try to connect to all of its targets. If all targets failed, the client bails out rather than retrying remaining targets from previous referral. Fix this by stacking all referrals and targets so the client can retry remaining targets from previous referrals in case all targets of current referral have failed. Thanks to samba, this can be easily tested like below * Run the following under dfs folder in samba server $ ln -s "msdfs:srv\\bad-share" link1 $ ln -s "msdfs:srv\\dfs\\link1,srv\\good-share" link0 * Before patch $ mount.cifs //srv/dfs/link0 /mnt -o ... mount error(2): No such file or directory Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)... * After patch $ mount.cifs //srv/dfs/link0 /mnt -o ... # ls /mnt bar fileshare1 sub Signed-off-by: Paulo Alcantara (SUSE) <pc@manguebit.com> Signed-off-by: Steve French <stfrench@microsoft.com>
2023-08-20smb: client: introduce DFS_CACHE_TGT_LIST()Paulo Alcantara

2023-08-02smb: client: fix dfs link mount against w2k8Paulo Alcantara
Customer reported that they couldn't mount their DFS link that was seen by the client as a DFS interlink -- special form of DFS link where its single target may point to a different DFS namespace -- and it turned out that it was just a regular DFS link where its referral header flags missed the StorageServers bit thus making the client think it couldn't tree connect to target directly without requiring further referrals. When the DFS link referral header flags misses the StoraServers bit and its target doesn't respond to any referrals, then tree connect to it. 2023-07-12smb: client: fix missed ses refcountingPaulo Alcantara
Use new cifs_smb_ses_inc_refcount() helper to get an active reference of @ses and @ses->dfs_root_ses (if set). This will prevent @ses->dfs_root_ses of being put in the next call to cifs_put_smb_ses() and thus potentially causing an use-after-free bug. 2023-06-28smb: client: improve DFS mount checkPaulo Alcantara
Some servers may return error codes from REQ_GET_DFS_REFERRAL requests that are unexpected by the client, so to make it easier, assume non-DFS mounts when the client can't get the initial DFS referral of @ctx->UNC in dfs_mount_share(). 2023-06-28smb: client: fix shared DFS root mounts with different prefixesPaulo Alcantara
When having two DFS root mounts that are connected to same namespace, same mount options but different prefix paths, we can't really use the shared @server->origin_fullpath when chasing DFS links in them. Move the origin_fullpath field to cifs_tcon structure so when having shared DFS root mounts with different prefix paths, and we need to chase any DFS links, dfs_get_automount_devname() will pick up the correct full path out of the @tcon that will be used for the new mount. 2023-06-28smb: client: fix parsing of source mount optionPaulo Alcantara
Handle trailing and leading separators when parsing UNC and prefix paths in smb3_parse_devname(). Then, store the sanitised paths in smb3_fs_context::source. This fixes the following cases $ mount //srv/share// /mnt/1 -o ... $ cat /mnt/1/d0/f0 cat: /mnt/1/d0/f0: Invalid argument The -EINVAL was returned because the client sent SMB2_CREATE "\\d0\f0" rather than SMB2_CREATE "\d0\f0". $ mount //srv//share /mnt/1 -o ... mount: Invalid argument The -EINVAL was returned correctly although the client only realised it after sending a couple of bad requests rather than bailing out earlier when parsing mount options.
