2021-11-06include/linux/mm.h: move nr_free_buffer_pages from swap.h to mm.hMianhan Liu
nr_free_buffer_pages could be exposed through mm.h instead of swap.h. The advantage of this change is that it can reduce the obsolete includes. For example, net/ipv4/tcp.c wouldn't need swap.h any more since it has already included mm.h. Similarly, after checking all the other files, it comes that tcp.c, udp.c meter.c ,... follow the same rule, so these files can have swap.h removed too. Moreover, after preprocessing all the files that use nr_free_buffer_pages, it turns out that those files have already included mm.h.Thus, we can move nr_free_buffer_pages from swap.h to mm.h safely. This change will not affect the compilation of other files. 2021-11-06memblock: allow to specify flags with memblock_add_node()David Hildenbrand
We want to specify flags when hotplugging memory. Let's prepare to pass flags to memblock_add_node() by adjusting all existing users. Note that when hotplugging memory the system is already up and running and we might have concurrent memblock users: for example, while we're hotplugging memory, kexec_file code might search for suitable memory regions to place kexec images. It's important to add the memory directly to memblock via a single call with the right flags, instead of adding the memory first and apply flags later: otherwise, concurrent memblock users might temporarily stumble over memblocks with wrong flags, which will be important in a follow-up patch that introduces a new flag to properly handle add_memory_driver_managed(). 2021-11-06mm: khugepaged: recalculate min_free_kbytes after stopping khugepagedLiangcai Fan
When initializing transparent huge pages, min_free_kbytes would be calculated according to what khugepaged expected. So when transparent huge pages get disabled, min_free_kbytes should be recalculated instead of the higher value set by khugepaged. 2021-11-06mm: add zap_skip_check_mapping() helperPeter Xu
Use the helper for the checks. Rename "check_mapping" into "zap_mapping" because "check_mapping" looks like a bool but in fact it stores the mapping itself. When it's set, we check the mapping (it must be non-NULL). When it's cleared we skip the check, which works like the old way. Move the duplicated comments to the helper too. 2021-11-06mm: drop first_index/last_index in zap_detailsPeter Xu
The first_index/last_index parameters in zap_details are actually only used in unmap_mapping_range_tree(). At the meantime, this function is only called by unmap_mapping_pages() once. Instead of passing these two variables through the whole stack of page zapping code, remove them from zap_details and let them simply be parameters of unmap_mapping_range_tree(), which is inlined. Transform write_one_page() into folio_write_one() and add a compatibility wrapper. Also move the declaration to pagemap.h as this is page cache functionality that doesn't need to be used by the rest of the kernel. Saves 58 bytes of kernel text. While folio_write_one() is 101 bytes smaller than write_one_page(), the inlined call to page_folio() expands each caller. Reimplement set_page_dirty() as a wrapper around folio_mark_dirty(). There is no change to filesystems as they were already being called with the compound_head of the page being marked dirty. We avoid several calls to compound_head(), both statically (through using folio_test_dirty() instead of PageDirty() and dynamically by calling folio_mapping() instead of page_mapping(). Also return bool instead of int to show the range of values actually returned, and add kernel-doc. 2021-09-27mm/util: Add folio_mapping() and folio_file_mapping()Matthew Wilcox (Oracle)
These are the folio equivalent of page_mapping() and page_file_mapping(). Add an out-of-line page_mapping() wrapper around folio_mapping() in order to prevent the page_folio() call from bloating every caller of page_mapping(). Adjust page_file_mapping() and page_mapping_file() to use folios internally. Rename __page_file_mapping() to swapcache_mapping() and change it to take a folio. This ends up saving 122 bytes of text overall. folio_mapping() is 45 bytes shorter than page_mapping() was, but the new page_mapping() wrapper is 30 bytes. The major reduction is a few bytes less in dozens of nfs functions (which call page_file_mapping()). Most of these appear to be a slight change in gcc's register allocation decisions, which allow: 48 8b 56 08 mov 0x8(%rsi),%rdx 48 8d 42 ff lea -0x1(%rdx),%rax 83 e2 01 and $0x1,%edx 48 0f 44 c6 cmove %rsi,%rax to become: 48 8b 46 08 mov 0x8(%rsi),%rax 48 8d 78 ff lea -0x1(%rax),%rdi a8 01 test $0x1,%al 48 0f 44 fe cmove %rsi,%rdi for a reduction of a single byte. If we know we have a folio, we can call folio_put() instead of put_page() and save the overhead of calling compound_head(). Also skips the devmap checks. This commit looks like it should be a no-op, but actually saves 684 bytes of text with the distro-derived config that I'm testing. Some functions grow a little while others shrink. I presume the compiler is making different inlining decisions. 2021-09-27mm: Introduce struct folioMatthew Wilcox (Oracle)
A struct folio is a new abstraction to replace the venerable struct page. A function which takes a struct folio argument declares that it will operate on the entire (possibly compound) page, not just PAGE_SIZE bytes. In return, the caller guarantees that the pointer it is passing does not point to a tail page. No change to generated code. This reverts commit 9857a17f206ff374aea78bccfb687f145368be2e. That commit was completely broken, and I should have caught on to it earlier. But happily, the kernel test robot noticed the breakage fairly quickly. The breakage is because "try_get_page()" is about avoiding the page reference count overflow case, but is otherwise the exact same as a plain "get_page()". In contrast, "try_get_compound_head()" is an entirely different beast, and uses __page_cache_add_speculative() because it's not just about the page reference count, but also about possibly racing with the underlying page going away. So all the commentary about how "try_get_page() has fallen a little behind in terms of maintenance, try_get_compound_head() handles speculative page references more thoroughly" was just completely wrong: yes, try_get_compound_head() handles speculative page references, but the point is that try_get_page() does not, and must not. So there's no lack of maintainance - there are fundamentally different semantics. A speculative page reference would be entirely wrong in "get_page()", and it's entirely wrong in "try_get_page()". It's not about speculation, it's purely about "uhhuh, you can't get this page because you've tried to increment the reference count too much already". The reason the kernel test robot noticed this bug was that it hit the VM_BUG_ON() in __page_cache_add_speculative(), which is all about verifying that the context of any speculative page access is correct. But since that isn't what try_get_page() is all about, the VM_BUG_ON() tests things that are not correct to test for try_get_page(). In the current implementation of soft offline, if non-LRU page is met, all the slab caches will be dropped to free the page then offline. But if the page is not slab page all the effort is wasted in vain. Even though it is a slab page, it is not guaranteed the page could be freed at all. However the side effect and cost is quite high. It does not only drop the slab caches, but also may drop a significant amount of page caches which are associated with inode caches. It could make the most workingset gone in order to just offline a page. And the offline is not guaranteed to succeed at all, actually I really doubt the success rate for real life workload. Furthermore the worse consequence is the system may be locked up and unusable since the page cache release may incur huge amount of works queued for memcg release. Actually we ran into such unpleasant case in our production environment. try_grab_page() does the same thing as try_grab_compound_head(..., refs=1, ...), just with a different API. So there is a lot of code duplication there. We want to remove VM_DENYWRITE only currently only used when mapping the executable during exec. During exec, we already deny_write_access() the executable, however, after exec completes the VMAs mapped with VM_DENYWRITE effectively keeps write access denied via deny_write_access(). Let's deny write access when setting or replacing the MM exe_file. With this change, we can remove VM_DENYWRITE for mapping executables. Make set_mm_exe_file() return an error in case deny_write_access() fails; note that this should never happen, because exec code does a deny_write_access() early and keeps write access denied when calling set_mm_exe_file. However, it makes the code easier to read and makes set_mm_exe_file() and replace_mm_exe_file() look more similar. This represents a minor user space visible change: sys_prctl(PR_SET_MM_MAP/EXE_FILE) can now fail if the file is already opened writable. Also, after sys_prctl(PR_SET_MM_MAP/EXE_FILE) the file cannot be opened writable. Note that we can already fail with -EACCES if the file doesn't have execute permissions. Acked-by: "Eric W. 2021-06-30mm: memory: add orig_pmd to struct vm_faultYang Shi
Pach series "mm: thp: use generic THP migration for NUMA hinting fault", v3. When the THP NUMA fault support was added THP migration was not supported yet. So the ad hoc THP migration was implemented in NUMA fault handling. Since v4.14 THP migration has been supported so it doesn't make too much sense to still keep another THP migration implementation rather than using the generic migration code. It is definitely a maintenance burden to keep two THP migration implementation for different code paths and it is more error prone. Using the generic THP migration implementation allows us remove the duplicate code and some hacks needed by the old ad hoc implementation. A quick grep shows x86_64, PowerPC (book3s), ARM64 ans S390 support both THP and NUMA balancing. The most of them support THP migration except for S390. Zi Yan tried to add THP migration support for S390 before but it was not accepted due to the design of S390 PMD. For the discussion, please see: https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/4/27/953. Per the discussion with Gerald Schaefer in v1 it is acceptible to skip huge PMD for S390 for now. I saw there were some hacks about gup from git history, but I didn't figure out if they have been removed or not since I just found FOLL_NUMA code in the current gup implementation and they seems useful. Patch #1 ~ #2 are preparation patches. Patch #3 is the real meat. Patch #4 ~ #6 keep consistent counters and behaviors with before. Patch #7 skips change huge PMD to prot_none if thp migration is not supported. Test ---- Did some tests to measure the latency of do_huge_pmd_numa_page. The test VM has 80 vcpus and 64G memory. The test would create 2 processes to consume 128G memory together which would incur memory pressure to cause THP splits. And it also creates 80 processes to hog cpu, and the memory consumer processes are bound to different nodes periodically in order to increase NUMA faults. This was done to simplify the initial implementation of vmmemap freeing for hugetlb pages. Now, remove this simplification by allowing PMD mapping and switching to PTE mappings as needed for allocated hugetlb pages. When a hugetlb page is allocated, the vmemmap page tables are walked to free vmemmap pages. During this walk, split huge PMD mappings to PTE mappings as required. In the unlikely case PTE pages can not be allocated, return error(ENOMEM) and do not optimize vmemmap of the hugetlb page. When HugeTLB pages are freed from the pool, we do not attempt to coalesce and move back to a PMD mapping because it is much more complex. 2021-06-30mm: hugetlb: alloc the vmemmap pages associated with each HugeTLB pageMuchun Song
When we free a HugeTLB page to the buddy allocator, we need to allocate the vmemmap pages associated with it. However, we may not be able to allocate the vmemmap pages when the system is under memory pressure. In this case, we just refuse to free the HugeTLB page. This changes behavior in some corner cases as listed below: 1) Failing to free a huge page triggered by the user (decrease nr_pages). User needs to try again later. 2) Failing to free a surplus huge page when freed by the application. Try again later when freeing a huge page next time. 3) Failing to dissolve a free huge page on ZONE_MOVABLE via offline_pages(). This can happen when we have plenty of ZONE_MOVABLE memory, but not enough kernel memory to allocate vmemmmap pages. We may even be able to migrate huge page contents, but will not be able to dissolve the source huge page. This will prevent an offline operation and is unfortunate as memory offlining is expected to succeed on movable zones. Users that depend on memory hotplug to succeed for movable zones should carefully consider whether the memory savings gained from this feature are worth the risk of possibly not being able to offline memory in certain situations. 4) Failing to dissolve a huge page on CMA/ZONE_MOVABLE via alloc_contig_range() - once we have that handling in place. Mainly affects CMA and virtio-mem. Similar to 3). virito-mem will handle migration errors gracefully. CMA might be able to fallback on other free areas within the CMA region. Vmemmap pages are allocated from the page freeing context. In order for those allocations to be not disruptive (e.g. trigger oom killer) __GFP_NORETRY is used. hugetlb_lock is dropped for the allocation because a non sleeping allocation would be too fragile and it could fail too easily under memory pressure. GFP_ATOMIC or other modes to access memory reserves is not used because we want to prevent consuming reserves under heavy hugetlb freeing. 2021-06-30mm: hugetlb: free the vmemmap pages associated with each HugeTLB pageMuchun Song
Every HugeTLB has more than one struct page structure. We __know__ that we only use the first 4 (__NR_USED_SUBPAGE) struct page structures to store metadata associated with each HugeTLB. There are a lot of struct page structures associated with each HugeTLB page. For tail pages, the value of compound_head is the same. So we can reuse first page of tail page structures. We map the virtual addresses of the remaining pages of tail page structures to the first tail page struct, and then free these page frames. Therefore, we need to reserve two pages as vmemmap areas. When we allocate a HugeTLB page from the buddy, we can free some vmemmap pages associated with each HugeTLB page. It is more appropriate to do it in the prep_new_huge_page(). The free_vmemmap_pages_per_hpage(), which indicates how many vmemmap pages associated with a HugeTLB page can be freed, returns zero for now, which means the feature is disabled. We will enable it once all the infrastructure is there. After removal of DISCINTIGMEM the NEED_MULTIPLE_NODES and NUMA configuration options are equivalent. Drop CONFIG_NEED_MULTIPLE_NODES and use CONFIG_NUMA instead.
