2017-03-13x86/mm: Introduce mmap_compat_base() for 32-bit mmap()Dmitry Safonov
mmap() uses a base address, from which it starts to look for a free space for allocation. The base address is stored in mm->mmap_base, which is calculated during exec(). The address depends on task's size, set rlimit for stack, ASLR randomization. The base depends on the task size and the number of random bits which are different for 64-bit and 32bit applications. Due to the fact, that the base address is fixed, its mmap() from a compat (32bit) syscall issued by a 64bit task will return a address which is based on the 64bit base address and does not fit into the 32bit address space (4GB). The returned pointer is truncated to 32bit, which results in an invalid address. To solve store a seperate compat address base plus a compat legacy address base in mm_struct. These bases are calculated at exec() time and can be used later to address the 32bit compat mmap() issued by 64 bit applications. As a consequence of this change 32-bit applications issuing a 64-bit syscall (after doing a long jump) will get a 64-bit mapping now. Before this change 32-bit applications always got a 32bit mapping. Currently bd_addr lives in mm_struct, which is otherwise architecture independent. Architecture-specific data is supposed to live within mm_context_t (itself contained in mm_struct). Other x86-specific context like the pkey accounting data lives in mm_context_t, and there's no readon the MPX data can't also live there. So as to keep the arch-specific data togather, and to set a good example for others, this patch moves bd_addr into x86's mm_context_t. 2016-11-22mm: Add a user_ns owner to mm_struct and fix ptrace permission checksEric W. Biederman
During exec dumpable is cleared if the file that is being executed is not readable by the user executing the file. A bug in ptrace_may_access allows reading the file if the executable happens to enter into a subordinate user namespace (aka clone(CLONE_NEWUSER), unshare(CLONE_NEWUSER), or setns(fd, CLONE_NEWUSER). This problem is fixed with only necessary userspace breakage by adding a user namespace owner to mm_struct, captured at the time of exec, so it is clear in which user namespace CAP_SYS_PTRACE must be present in to be able to safely give read permission to the executable. The function ptrace_may_access is modified to verify that the ptracer has CAP_SYS_ADMIN in task->mm->user_ns instead of task->cred->user_ns. This ensures that if the task changes it's cred into a subordinate user namespace it does not become ptraceable. The function ptrace_attach is modified to only set PT_PTRACE_CAP when CAP_SYS_PTRACE is held over task->mm->user_ns. The intent of PT_PTRACE_CAP is to be a flag to note that whatever permission changes the task might go through the tracer has sufficient permissions for it not to be an issue. task->cred->user_ns is always the same as or descendent of mm->user_ns. Which guarantees that having CAP_SYS_PTRACE over mm->user_ns is the worst case for the tasks credentials. To prevent regressions mm->dumpable and mm->user_ns are not considered when a task has no mm. Node-based reclaim requires node-based LRUs and locking. This is a preparation patch that just moves the lru_lock to the node so later patches are easier to review. It is a mechanical change but note this patch makes contention worse because the LRU lock is hotter and direct reclaim and kswapd can contend on the same lock even when reclaiming from different zones. 2016-07-08x86/vdso: Add mremap hook to vm_special_mappingDmitry Safonov
Add possibility for 32-bit user-space applications to move the vDSO mapping. Previously, when a user-space app called mremap() for the vDSO address, in the syscall return path it would land on the previous address of the vDSOpage, resulting in segmentation violation. Now it lands fine and returns to userspace with a remapped vDSO. This will also fix the context.vdso pointer for 64-bit, which does not affect the user of vDSO after mremap() currently, but this may change in the future. As suggested by Andy, return -EINVAL for mremap() that would split the vDSO image: that operation cannot possibly result in a working system so reject it. Renamed and moved the text_mapping structure declaration inside map_vdso(), as it used only there and now it complements the vvar_mapping variable. There is still a problem for remapping the vDSO in glibc applications: the linker relocates addresses for syscalls on the vDSO page, so you need to relink with the new addresses. 2016-05-20mm, oom_reaper: do not mmput synchronously from the oom reaper contextMichal Hocko
Tetsuo has properly noted that mmput slow path might get blocked waiting for another party (e.g. exit_aio waits for an IO). If that happens the oom_reaper would be put out of the way and will not be able to process next oom victim. We should strive for making this context as reliable and independent on other subsystems as much as possible. Introduce mmput_async which will perform the slow path from an async (WQ) context. This will delay the operation but that shouldn't be a problem because the oom_reaper has reclaimed the victim's address space for most cases as much as possible and the remaining context shouldn't bind too much memory anymore. The only exception is when mmap_sem trylock has failed which shouldn't happen too often. The issue is only theoretical but not impossible. Many developers already know that field for reference count of the struct page is _count and atomic type. They would try to handle it directly and this could break the purpose of page reference count tracepoint. To prevent direct _count modification, this patch rename it to _refcount and add warning message on the code. 2016-01-15mm, dax, pmem: introduce {get|put}_dev_pagemap() for dax-gupDan Williams
get_dev_page() enables paths like get_user_pages() to pin a dynamically mapped pfn-range (devm_memremap_pages()) while the resulting struct page objects are in use. Unlike get_page() it may fail if the device is, or is in the process of being, disabled. While the initial lookup of the range may be an expensive list walk, the result is cached to speed up subsequent lookups which are likely to be in the same mapped range. devm_memremap_pages() now requires a reference counter to be specified at init time. For pmem this means moving request_queue allocation into pmem_alloc() so the existing queue usage counter can track "device pages". ZONE_DEVICE pages always have an elevated count and will never be on an lru reclaim list. That space in 'struct page' can be redirected for other uses, but for safety introduce a poison value that will always trip __list_add() to assert. This allows half of the struct list_head storage to be reclaimed with some assurance to back up the assumption that the page count never goes to zero and a list_add() is never attempted. 2016-01-15thp: introduce deferred_split_huge_page()Kirill A. Shutemov
Currently we don't split huge page on partial unmap. It's not an ideal situation. It can lead to memory overhead. Furtunately, we can detect partial unmap on page_remove_rmap(). But we cannot call split_huge_page() from there due to locking context. It's also counterproductive to do directly from munmap() codepath: in many cases we will hit this from exit(2) and splitting the huge page just to free it up in small pages is not what we really want. The patch introduce deferred_split_huge_page() which put the huge page into queue for splitting. The splitting itself will happen when we get memory pressure via shrinker interface. 2016-01-15mm: rework mapcount accounting to enable 4k mapping of THPsKirill A. Shutemov
We're going to allow mapping of individual 4k pages of THP compound. It means we need to track mapcount on per small page basis. Straight-forward approach is to use ->_mapcount in all subpages to track how many time this subpage is mapped with PMDs or PTEs combined. But this is rather expensive: mapping or unmapping of a THP page with PMD would require HPAGE_PMD_NR atomic operations instead of single we have now. The idea is to store separately how many times the page was mapped as whole -- compound_mapcount. This frees up ->_mapcount in subpages to track PTE mapcount. We use the same approach as with compound page destructor and compound order to store compound_mapcount: use space in first tail page, ->mapping this time. Any time we map/unmap whole compound page (THP or hugetlb) -- we increment/decrement compound_mapcount. When we map part of compound page with PTE we operate on ->_mapcount of the subpage. page_mapcount() counts both: PTE and PMD mappings of the page. Basically, we have mapcount for a subpage spread over two counters. It makes tricky to detect when last mapcount for a page goes away. We introduced PageDoubleMap() for this. When we split THP PMD for the first time and there's other PMD mapping left we offset up ->_mapcount in all subpages by one and set PG_double_map on the compound page. These additional references go away with last compound_mapcount. This approach provides a way to detect when last mapcount goes away on per small page basis without introducing new overhead for most common cases. Tail page refcounting is utterly complicated and painful to support. It uses ->_mapcount on tail pages to store how many times this page is pinned. get_page() bumps ->_mapcount on tail page in addition to ->_count on head. This information is required by split_huge_page() to be able to distribute pins from head of compound page to tails during the split. We will need ->_mapcount to account PTE mappings of subpages of the compound page. We eliminate need in current meaning of ->_mapcount in tail pages by forbidding split entirely if the page is pinned. The only user of tail page refcounting is THP which is marked BROKEN for now. When inspecting a vague code inside prctl(PR_SET_MM_MEM) call (which testing the RLIMIT_DATA value to figure out if we're allowed to assign new @start_brk, @brk, @start_data, @end_data from mm_struct) it's been commited that RLIMIT_DATA in a form it's implemented now doesn't do anything useful because most of user-space libraries use mmap() syscall for dynamic memory allocations. Linus suggested to convert RLIMIT_DATA rlimit into something suitable for anonymous memory accounting. 2016-01-14mm, shmem: add internal shmem resident memory accountingJerome Marchand
Currently looking at /proc/<pid>/status or statm, there is no way to distinguish shmem pages from pages mapped to a regular file (shmem pages are mapped to /dev/zero), even though their implication in actual memory use is quite different. The internal accounting currently counts shmem pages together with regular files. As a preparation to extend the userspace interfaces, this patch adds MM_SHMEMPAGES counter to mm_rss_stat to account for shmem pages separately from MM_FILEPAGES. The next patch will expose it to userspace - this patch doesn't change the exported values yet, by adding up MM_SHMEMPAGES to MM_FILEPAGES at places where MM_FILEPAGES was used before. The only user-visible change after this patch is the OOM killer message that separates the reported "shmem-rss" from "file-rss". Hugh has pointed that compound_head() call can be unsafe in some context. I don't it's possible to trigger it in practice. But who knows. We can fix the race by changing how encode PageTail() and compound_head() within struct page to be able to update them in one shot. The patch introduces page->compound_head into third double word block in front of compound_dtor and compound_order. Bit 0 encodes PageTail() and the rest bits are pointer to head page if bit zero is set. The patch moves page->pmd_huge_pte out of word, just in case if an architecture defines pgtable_t into something what can have the bit 0 set. hugetlb_cgroup uses page->lru.next in the second tail page to store pointer struct hugetlb_cgroup. The patch switch it to use page->private in the second tail page instead. The space is free since ->first_page is removed from the union. The patch also opens possibility to remove HUGETLB_CGROUP_MIN_ORDER limitation, since there's now space in first tail page to store struct hugetlb_cgroup pointer. But that's out of scope of the patch. That means page->compound_head shares storage space with: - page->lru.next; - page->next; - page->rcu_head.next; That's too long list to be absolutely sure, but looks like nobody uses bit 0 of the word. page->rcu_head.next guaranteed[1] to have bit 0 clean as long as we use call_rcu(), call_rcu_bh(), call_rcu_sched(), or call_srcu(). But future call_rcu_lazy() is not allowed as it makes use of the bit and we can get false positive PageTail(). The patch halves space occupied by compound_dtor and compound_order in struct page. For compound_order, it's trivial long -> short conversion. For get_compound_page_dtor(), we now use hardcoded table for destructor lookup and store its index in the struct page instead of direct pointer to destructor. It shouldn't be a big trouble to maintain the table: we have only two destructor and NULL currently. This patch free up one word in tail pages for reuse. This is preparation for the next patch. When unmapping pages it is necessary to flush the TLB. If that page was accessed by another CPU then an IPI is used to flush the remote CPU. That is a lot of IPIs if kswapd is scanning and unmapping >100K pages per second. There already is a window between when a page is unmapped and when it is TLB flushed. This series increases the window so multiple pages can be flushed using a single IPI. This should be safe or the kernel is hosed already. Patch 1 simply made the rest of the series easier to write as ftrace could identify all the senders of TLB flush IPIS. Patch 2 tracks what CPUs potentially map a PFN and then sends an IPI to flush the entire TLB. Patch 3 tracks when there potentially are writable TLB entries that need to be batched differently Patch 4 increases SWAP_CLUSTER_MAX to further batch flushes The performance impact is documented in the changelogs but in the optimistic case on a 4-socket machine the full series reduces interrupts from 900K interrupts/second to 60K interrupts/second. This patch (of 4): It is easy to trace when an IPI is received to flush a TLB but harder to detect what event sent it. This patch makes it easy to identify the source of IPIs being transmitted for TLB flushes on x86. 2015-08-21mm: make page pfmemalloc check more robustMichal Hocko
Commit c48a11c7ad26 ("netvm: propagate page->pfmemalloc to skb") added checks for page->pfmemalloc to __skb_fill_page_desc(): if (page->pfmemalloc && !page->mapping) skb->pfmemalloc = true; It assumes page->mapping == NULL implies that page->pfmemalloc can be trusted. However, __delete_from_page_cache() can set set page->mapping to NULL and leave page->index value alone. Due to being in union, a non-zero page->index will be interpreted as true page->pfmemalloc. So the assumption is invalid if the networking code can see such a page. And it seems it can. We have encountered this with a NFS over loopback setup when such a page is attached to a new skbuf. There is no copying going on in this case so the page confuses __skb_fill_page_desc which interprets the index as pfmemalloc flag and the network stack drops packets that have been allocated using the reserves unless they are to be queued on sockets handling the swapping which is the case here and that leads to hangs when the nfs client waits for a response from the server which has been dropped and thus never arrive. The struct page is already heavily packed so rather than finding another hole to put it in, let's do a trick instead. We can reuse the index again but define it to an impossible value (-1UL). This is the page index so it should never see the value that large. Replace all direct users of page->pfmemalloc by page_is_pfmemalloc which will hide this nastiness from unspoiled eyes. The information will get lost if somebody wants to use page->index obviously but that was the case before and the original code expected that the information should be persisted somewhere else if that is really needed (e.g. what SLAB and SLUB do). 2015-05-12mm/net: Rename and move page fragment handling from net/ to mm/Alexander Duyck
This change moves the __alloc_page_frag functionality out of the networking stack and into the page allocation portion of mm. The idea it so help make this maintainable by placing it with other page allocation functions. Since we are moving it from skbuff.c to page_alloc.c I have also renamed the basic defines and structure from netdev_alloc_cache to page_frag_cache to reflect that this is now part of a different kernel subsystem. I have also added a simple __free_page_frag function which can handle freeing the frags based on the skb->head pointer. The model for this is based off of __free_pages since we don't actually need to deal with all of the cases that put_page handles. The main place where PMD tables is accounted is __pmd_alloc() and free_pmd_range(). But there're few corner cases: - HugeTLB can share PMD page tables. The patch handles by accounting the table to all processes who share it. - x86 PAE pre-allocates few PMD tables on fork. - Architectures with FIRST_USER_ADDRESS > 0. We need to adjust sanity check on exit(2). Accounting only happens on configuration where PMD page table's level is present (PMD is not folded). As with nr_ptes we use per-mm counter. 2014-12-13mm/debug-pagealloc: prepare boottime configurable on/offJoonsoo Kim
Until now, debug-pagealloc needs extra flags in struct page, so we need to recompile whole source code when we decide to use it. This is really painful, because it takes some time to recompile and sometimes rebuild is not possible due to third party module depending on struct page. So, we can't use this good feature in many cases. Now, we have the page extension feature that allows us to insert extra flags to outside of struct page. This gets rid of third party module issue mentioned above. And, this allows us to determine if we need extra memory for this page extension in boottime. With these property, we can avoid using debug-pagealloc in boottime with low computational overhead in the kernel built with CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC. This will help our development process greatly. This patch is the preparation step to achive above goal. debug-pagealloc originally uses extra field of struct page, but, after this patch, it will use field of struct page_ext. Because memory for page_ext is allocated later than initialization of page allocator in CONFIG_SPARSEMEM, we should disable debug-pagealloc feature temporarily until initialization of page_ext. This patch implements this. 2014-12-10mm: embed the memcg pointer directly into struct pageJohannes Weiner
Memory cgroups used to have 5 per-page pointers. To allow users to disable that amount of overhead during runtime, those pointers were allocated in a separate array, with a translation layer between them and struct page. There is now only one page pointer remaining: the memcg pointer, that indicates which cgroup the page is associated with when charged. The complexity of runtime allocation and the runtime translation overhead is no longer justified to save that *potential* 0.19% of memory. With CONFIG_SLUB, page->mem_cgroup actually sits in the doubleword padding after the page->private member and doesn't even increase struct page, and then this patch actually saves space. 2014-11-18x86, mpx: On-demand kernel allocation of bounds tablesDave Hansen
This is really the meat of the MPX patch set. If there is one patch to review in the entire series, this is the one. There is a new ABI here and this kernel code also interacts with userspace memory in a relatively unusual manner. (small FAQ below). Long Description: This patch adds two prctl() commands to provide enable or disable the management of bounds tables in kernel, including on-demand kernel allocation (See the patch "on-demand kernel allocation of bounds tables") and cleanup (See the patch "cleanup unused bound tables"). Applications do not strictly need the kernel to manage bounds tables and we expect some applications to use MPX without taking advantage of this kernel support. This means the kernel can not simply infer whether an application needs bounds table management from the MPX registers. The prctl() is an explicit signal from userspace. PR_MPX_ENABLE_MANAGEMENT is meant to be a signal from userspace to require kernel's help in managing bounds tables. PR_MPX_DISABLE_MANAGEMENT is the opposite, meaning that userspace don't want kernel's help any more. With PR_MPX_DISABLE_MANAGEMENT, the kernel won't allocate and free bounds tables even if the CPU supports MPX. PR_MPX_ENABLE_MANAGEMENT will fetch the base address of the bounds directory out of a userspace register (bndcfgu) and then cache it into a new field (->bd_addr) in the 'mm_struct'. PR_MPX_DISABLE_MANAGEMENT will set "bd_addr" to an invalid address. Using this scheme, we can use "bd_addr" to determine whether the management of bounds tables in kernel is enabled. Also, the only way to access that bndcfgu register is via an xsaves, which can be expensive. Caching "bd_addr" like this also helps reduce the cost of those xsaves when doing table cleanup at munmap() time. Unfortunately, we can not apply this optimization to #BR fault time because we need an xsave to get the value of BNDSTATUS. ==== Why does the hardware even have these Bounds Tables? ==== MPX only has 4 hardware registers for storing bounds information. If MPX-enabled code needs more than these 4 registers, it needs to spill them somewhere. It has two special instructions for this which allow the bounds to be moved between the bounds registers and some new "bounds tables". They are similar conceptually to a page fault and will be raised by the MPX hardware during both bounds violations or when the tables are not present. This patch handles those #BR exceptions for not-present tables by carving the space out of the normal processes address space (essentially calling the new mmap() interface indroduced earlier in this patch set.) and then pointing the bounds-directory over to it. The tables *need* to be accessed and controlled by userspace because the instructions for moving bounds in and out of them are extremely frequent. They potentially happen every time a register pointing to memory is dereferenced. Any direct kernel involvement (like a syscall) to access the tables would obviously destroy performance. ==== Why not do this in userspace? ==== This patch is obviously doing this allocation in the kernel. However, MPX does not strictly *require* anything in the kernel. It can theoretically be done completely from userspace. Here are a few ways this *could* be done. I don't think any of them are practical in the real-world, but here they are. Q: Can virtual space simply be reserved for the bounds tables so that we never have to allocate them? A: As noted earlier, these tables are *HUGE*. An X-GB virtual area needs 4*X GB of virtual space, plus 2GB for the bounds directory. If we were to preallocate them for the 128TB of user virtual address space, we would need to reserve 512TB+2GB, which is larger than the entire virtual address space today. This means they can not be reserved ahead of time. Also, a single process's pre-popualated bounds directory consumes 2GB of virtual *AND* physical memory. IOW, it's completely infeasible to prepopulate bounds directories. Q: Can we preallocate bounds table space at the same time memory is allocated which might contain pointers that might eventually need bounds tables? A: This would work if we could hook the site of each and every memory allocation syscall. This can be done for small, constrained applications. But, it isn't practical at a larger scale since a given app has no way of controlling how all the parts of the app might allocate memory (think libraries). The kernel is really the only place to intercept these calls. Q: Could a bounds fault be handed to userspace and the tables allocated there in a signal handler instead of in the kernel? A: (thanks to tglx) mmap() is not on the list of safe async handler functions and even if mmap() would work it still requires locking or nasty tricks to keep track of the allocation state there. Having ruled out all of the userspace-only approaches for managing bounds tables that we could think of, we create them on demand in the kernel. We have mm_init(), which is supposed to init/nullify mm's internals, but it doesn't init all the fields it should: - on fork ->mmap,mm_rb,vmacache_seqnum,map_count,mm_cpumask,locked_vm are zeroed in dup_mmap(); - on fork ->pmd_huge_pte is zeroed in dup_mm(), immediately before calling mm_init(); - ->cpu_vm_mask_var ptr is initialized by mm_init_cpumask(), which is called before mm_init() on both fork and exec; - ->context is initialized by init_new_context(), which is called after mm_init() on both fork and exec; Let's consolidate all the initializations in mm_init() to make the code look cleaner. We don't have any good way to figure out what kinds of flushes are being attempted. Right now, we can try to use the vm counters, but those only tell us what we actually did with the hardware (one-by-one vs full) and don't tell us what was actually _requested_. This allows us to select out "interesting" TLB flushes that we might want to optimize (like the ranged ones) and ignore the ones that we have very little control over (the ones at context switch).
