2018-11-23time: Add SPDX license identifiersThomas Gleixner
Update the time(r) core files files with the correct SPDX license identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This work is based on a script and data from Philippe Ombredanne, Kate Stewart and myself. The data has been created with two independent license scanners and manual inspection. The following files do not contain any direct license information and have been omitted from the big initial SPDX changes: timeconst.bc: The .bc files were not touched time.c, timer.c, timekeeping.c: Licence was deduced from EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL As those files do not contain direct license references they fall under the project license, i.e. GPL V2 only. 2017-11-01clockevents: Update clockevents device next_event on stopPrasad Sodagudi
clockevent_device::next_event holds the next timer event of a clock event device. The value is updated in clockevents_program_event(), i.e. when the hardware timer is armed for the next expiry. When there are no software timers armed on a CPU, the corresponding per CPU clockevent device is brought into ONESHOT_STOPPED state, but clockevent_device::next_event is not updated, because clockevents_program_event() is not called. So the content of clockevent_device::next_event is stale, which is not an issue when real hardware is used. But the hrtimer broadcast device relies on that information and the stale value causes spurious wakeups. Update clockevent_device::next_event to KTIME_MAX when it has been brought into ONESHOT_STOPPED state to avoid spurious wakeups. This reflects the proper expiry time of the stopped timer: infinity. 2016-12-25ktime: Get rid of the unionThomas Gleixner
ktime is a union because the initial implementation stored the time in scalar nanoseconds on 64 bit machine and in a endianess optimized timespec variant for 32bit machines. The Y2038 cleanup removed the timespec variant and switched everything to scalar nanoseconds. The union remained, but become completely pointless. Get rid of the union and just keep ktime_t as simple typedef of type s64. The conversion was done with coccinelle and some manual mopping up. 2015-05-19clockevents: Stop unused clockevent devicesViresh Kumar
To avoid getting spurious interrupts on a tickless CPU, clockevent device can now be stopped by switching to ONESHOT_STOPPED state. The natural place for handling this transition is tick_program_event(). On 'expires == KTIME_MAX', we skip programming the event and so we need to fix such call sites as well, to always call tick_program_event() irrespective of the expires value. Once the clockevent device is required again, check if it was earlier put into ONESHOT_STOPPED state. If yes, switch its state to ONESHOT before programming its event. To make sure we haven't missed any corner case, add a WARN() for the case where we try to reprogram clockevent device while we aren't configured in ONESHOT_STOPPED state. 2015-03-27clockevents: Manage device's state separately for the coreViresh Kumar
'enum clock_event_mode' is used for two purposes today: - to pass mode to the driver of clockevent device::set_mode(). - for managing state of the device for clockevents core. For supporting new modes/states we have moved away from the legacy set_mode() callback to new per-mode/state callbacks. New modes/states shouldn't be exposed to the legacy (now OBSOLOTE) callbacks and so we shouldn't add new states to 'enum clock_event_mode'. Lets have separate enums for the two use cases mentioned above. Keep using the earlier enum for legacy set_mode() callback and mark it OBSOLETE. And add another enum to clearly specify the possible states of a clockevent device. This also renames the newly added per-mode callbacks to reflect state changes. We haven't got rid of 'mode' member of 'struct clock_event_device' as it is used by some of the clockevent drivers and it would automatically die down once we migrate those drivers to the new interface. It ('mode') is only updated now for the drivers using the legacy interface. 2011-09-08clockevents: Make minimum delay adjustments configurableMartin Schwidefsky
The automatic increase of the min_delta_ns of a clockevents device should be done in the clockevents code as the minimum delay is an attribute of the clockevents device. In addition not all architectures want the automatic adjustment, on a massively virtualized system it can happen that the programming of a clock event fails several times in a row because the virtual cpu has been rescheduled quickly enough. In that case the minimum delay will erroneously be increased with no way back. The new config symbol GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS_MIN_ADJUST is used to enable the automatic adjustment. The config option is selected only for x86. 2010-12-17core: Replace __get_cpu_var with __this_cpu_read if not used for an address.Christoph Lameter
__get_cpu_var() can be replaced with this_cpu_read and will then use a single read instruction with implied address calculation to access the correct per cpu instance. However, the address of a per cpu variable passed to __this_cpu_read() cannot be determined (since it's an implied address conversion through segment prefixes). Therefore apply this only to uses of __get_cpu_var where the address of the variable is not used. 2009-11-13nohz: Allow 32-bit machines to sleep for more than 2.15 secondsJon Hunter
In the dynamic tick code, "max_delta_ns" (member of the "clock_event_device" structure) represents the maximum sleep time that can occur between timer events in nanoseconds. The variable, "max_delta_ns", is defined as an unsigned long which is a 32-bit integer for 32-bit machines and a 64-bit integer for 64-bit machines (if -m64 option is used for gcc). The value of max_delta_ns is set by calling the function "clockevent_delta2ns()" which returns a maximum value of LONG_MAX. For a 32-bit machine LONG_MAX is equal to 0x7fffffff and in nanoseconds this equates to ~2.15 seconds. Hence, the maximum sleep time for a 32-bit machine is ~2.15 seconds, where as for a 64-bit machine it will be many years. This patch changes the type of max_delta_ns to be "u64" instead of "unsigned long" so that this variable is a 64-bit type for both 32-bit and 64-bit machines. It also changes the maximum value returned by clockevent_delta2ns() to KTIME_MAX. Hence this allows a 32-bit machine to sleep for longer than ~2.15 seconds. Please note that this patch also changes "min_delta_ns" to be "u64" too and although this is unnecessary, it makes the patch simpler as it avoids to fixup all callers of clockevent_delta2ns(). commit 3f68535adad (clocksource: sanity check sysfs clocksource changes) prevents selection of non high resolution capable clocksources when high resolution mode is active, but did not take into account that the same rules apply for highres=off nohz=on. Check the tick device mode instead of hrtimer_hres_active() to verify whether the system needs to be protected from a switch to jiffies or other non highres capable clock sources. The issue of the endless reprogramming loop due to a too small min_delta_ns was fixed with the previous updates of the clock events code, but we had no information about the spread of this problem. I added a WARN_ON to get automated information via kerneloops.org and to get some direct reports, which allowed me to analyse the affected machines. The WARN_ON has served its purpose and would be annoying for a release kernel. Remove it and just keep the information about the increase of the min_delta_ns value. The C1E/HPET bug reports on AMDX2/RS690 systems where tracked down to a too small value of the HPET minumum delta for programming an event. The clockevents code needs to enforce an interrupt event on the clock event device in some cases. The enforcement code was stupid and naive, as it just added the minimum delta to the current time and tried to reprogram the device. When the minimum delta is too small, then this loops forever. Add a sanity check. Allow reprogramming to fail 3 times, then print a warning and double the minimum delta value to make sure, that this does not happen again. In tick_oneshot_setup we program the device to the given next_event, but we do not check the return value. We need to make sure that the device is programmed enforced so the interrupt handler engine starts working. Split out the reprogramming function from tick_program_event() and call it with the device, which was handed in to tick_setup_oneshot(). Set the force argument, so the devices is firing an interrupt. Build tested on ARM PXA family kernels and ARM's Realview platform kernels which both use genirq. 2007-03-16[PATCH] clockevents: Fix suspend/resume to disk hangsThomas Gleixner
I finally found a dual core box, which survives suspend/resume without crashing in the middle of nowhere. Sigh, I never figured out from the code and the bug reports what's going on. The observed hangs are caused by a stale state transition of the clock event devices, which keeps the RCU synchronization away from completion, when the non boot CPU is brought back up. The suspend/resume in oneshot mode needs the similar care as the periodic mode during suspend to RAM. My assumption that the state transitions during the different shutdown/bringups of s2disk would go through the periodic boot phase and then switch over to highres resp. nohz mode were simply wrong. The code which keeps track of jiffies and handles the long idle periods is shared between tick based and high resolution timer based dynticks. The dyntick functionality can be disabled on the kernel commandline. Provide also the infrastructure to support high resolution timers.
