These functions check should_resched() before unlocking spinlock/bh-enable: preempt_count always non-zero => should_resched() always returns false. cond_resched_lock() worked iff spin_needbreak is set. 2015-08-03sched/fair: Beef up wake_wide()Mike Galbraith
Josef Bacik reported that Facebook sees better performance with their 1:N load (1 dispatch/node, N workers/node) when carrying an old patch to try very hard to wake to an idle CPU. While looking at wake_wide(), I noticed that it doesn't pay attention to the wakeup of a many partner waker, returning 1 only when waking one of its many partners. Correct that, letting explicit domain flags override the heuristic. While at it, adjust task_struct bits, we don't need a 64-bit counter. 2015-08-03sched: Introduce the 'trace_sched_waking' tracepointPeter Zijlstra
Mathieu reported that since 317f394160e9 ("sched: Move the second half of ttwu() to the remote cpu") trace_sched_wakeup() can happen out of context of the waker. This is a problem when you want to analyse wakeup paths because it is now very hard to correlate the wakeup event to whoever issued the wakeup. OTOH trace_sched_wakeup() is issued at the point where we set p->state = TASK_RUNNING, which is right were we hand the task off to the scheduler, so this is an important point when looking at scheduling behaviour, up to here its been the wakeup path everything hereafter is due to scheduler policy. To bridge this gap, introduce a second tracepoint: trace_sched_waking. It is guaranteed to be called in the waker context. 2015-08-03sched/cputime: Guarantee stime + utime == rtimePeter Zijlstra
While the current code guarantees monotonicity for stime and utime independently of one another, it does not guarantee that the sum of both is equal to the total time we started out with. This confuses things (and peoples) who look at this sum, like top, and will report >100% usage followed by a matching period of 0%. Rework the code to provide both individual monotonicity and a coherent sum. 2015-07-21sched/idle: Move latency tracing stop/start calls deeper inside the idle loopLucas Stach
Make sure to stop tracing only once we are past a point where all latency tracing events have been processed (irqs are not enabled again). This has the slight advantage of capturing more latency related events in the idle path, but most importantly it makes sure that latency tracing doesn't get re-enabled inadvertently when new events are coming in. This makes the irqsoff latency tracer useful again, as we stop capturing CPU sleep time as IRQ latency. 2015-07-07sched/numa: Prefer NUMA hotness over cache hotnessSrikar Dronamraju
The current load balancer may not try to prevent a task from moving out of a preferred node to a less preferred node. The reason for this being: - Since sched features NUMA and NUMA_RESIST_LOWER are disabled by default, migrate_degrades_locality() always returns false. - Even if NUMA_RESIST_LOWER were to be enabled, if its cache hot, migrate_degrades_locality() never gets called. The above behaviour can mean that tasks can move out of their preferred node but they may be eventually be brought back to their preferred node by numa balancer (due to higher numa faults). To avoid the above, this commit merges migrate_degrades_locality() and migrate_improves_locality(). It also replaces 3 sched features NUMA, NUMA_FAVOUR_HIGHER and NUMA_RESIST_LOWER by a single sched feature NUMA. 2015-07-06sched/fair: Test list head instead of list entry in throttle_cfs_rq()Cong Wang
According to the comments, we need to test if this is the first throttled task, however, list_empty() tests on the entry cfs_rq->throttled_list, not the head, this is wrong. This is a bug because we don't re-init the list entry after removing it from the list, so list_empty() could return false even if the list is really empty. 2015-07-04sched/numa: Fix numa balancing stats in /proc/pid/schedSrikar Dronamraju
Commit 44dba3d5d6a1 ("sched: Refactor task_struct to use numa_faults instead of numa_* pointers") modified the way tsk->numa_faults stats are accounted. However that commit never touched show_numa_stats() that is displayed in /proc/pid/sched and thus the numbers displayed in /proc/pid/sched don't match the actual numbers. Fix it by making sure that /proc/pid/sched reflects the task fault numbers. Also add group fault stats too. Also couple of more modifications are added here: 1. Format changes: - Previously we would list two entries per node, one for private and one for shared. Also the home node info was listed in each entry. - Now preferred node, total_faults and current node are displayed separately. - Now there is one entry per node, that lists private,shared task and group faults. 2. Unit changes: - p->numa_pages_migrated was getting reset after every read of /proc/pid/sched. It's more useful to have absolute numbers since differential migrations between two accesses can be more easily calculated. Currently print_cfs_rq() is declared in include/linux/sched.h. However it's not used outside kernel/sched. Some hacks were put in place to reduce the worst of the damage could be done, and the common sense rule was adopted that fresh mounts of proc and sysfs should allow no more than bind mounts of proc and sysfs. Unfortunately that rule has not been fully enforced. There are two kinds of gaps in that enforcement. Only filesystems mounted on empty directories of proc and sysfs should be ignored but the test for empty directories was insufficient. So in my tree directories on proc, sysctl and sysfs that will always be empty are created specially. Every other technique is imperfect as an ordinary directory can have entries added even after a readdir returns and shows that the directory is empty. Special creation of directories for mount points makes the code in the kernel a smidge clearer about it's purpose. I asked container developers from the various container projects to help test this and no holes were found in the set of mount points on proc and sysfs that are created specially. This set of changes also starts enforcing the mount flags of fresh mounts of proc and sysfs are consistent with the existing mount of proc and sysfs. I expected this to be the boring part of the work but unfortunately unprivileged userspace winds up mounting fresh copies of proc and sysfs with noexec and nosuid clear when root set those flags on the previous mount of proc and sysfs. So for now only the atime, read-only and nodev attributes which userspace happens to keep consistent are enforced. Dealing with the noexec and nosuid attributes remains for another time. This set of changes also addresses an issue with how open file descriptors from /proc/<pid>/ns/* are displayed. Recently readlink of /proc/<pid>/fd has been triggering a WARN_ON that has not been meaningful since it was added (as all of the code in the kernel was converted) and is not now actively wrong. There is also a short list of issues that have not been fixed yet that I will mention briefly. It is possible to rename a directory from below to above a bind mount. At which point any directory pointers below the renamed directory can be walked up to the root directory of the filesystem. With user namespaces enabled a bind mount of the bind mount can be created allowing the user to pick a directory whose children they can rename to outside of the bind mount. This is challenging to fix and doubly so because all obvious solutions must touch code that is in the performance part of pathname resolution. Commit 1cde2930e154 ("sched/preempt: Add static_key() to preempt_notifiers") had two problems. First, the preempt-notifier API needs to sleep with the addition of the static_key, we do however need to hold off preemption while modifying the preempt notifier list, otherwise a preemption could observe an inconsistent list state. KVM correctly registers and unregisters preempt notifiers with preemption disabled, so the sleep caused dmesg splats. Second, KVM registers and unregisters preemption notifiers very often (in vcpu_load/vcpu_put). With a single uniprocessor guest the static key would move between 0 and 1 continuously, hitting the slow path on every userspace exit. To fix this, wrap the static_key inc/dec in a new API, and call it from KVM. Similar to commit a992bf836f9 ("gcov: add support for GCC 4.9"), this patch takes into account the existence of a new gcov counter (see gcc's gcc/gcov-counter.def.) Firstly, it increments GCOV_COUNTERS (to 10), which makes the data structure struct gcov_info compatible with GCC 5.1. Secondly, a corresponding counter function __gcov_merge_icall_topn (Top N value tracking for indirect calls) is included in base.c with the other gcov counters unused for kernel profiling. Commit f06e5153f4ae2e ("kernel/panic.c: add "crash_kexec_post_notifiers" option for kdump after panic_notifers") introduced "crash_kexec_post_notifiers" kernel boot option, which toggles wheather panic() calls crash_kexec() before panic_notifiers and dump kmsg or after. The problem is that the commit overlooks panic_on_oops kernel boot option. If it is enabled, crash_kexec() is called directly without going through panic() in oops path. To fix this issue, this patch adds a check to "crash_kexec_post_notifiers" in the condition of kexec_should_crash(). Also, put a comment in kexec_should_crash() to explain not obvious things on this patch. I found a few more bugs that I would have sent to fix 4.1, but since 4.1 is already out, I'm sending this before sending my 4.2 request (which is ready to go). After fixing the previous filter issue reported by Vince Weaver, I could not come up with a situation where the operand counter (cnt) could go below zero, so I added a WARN_ON_ONCE(cnt < 0). Vince was able to trigger that warn on with his fuzzer test, but didn't have a filter input that caused it. Later, Sasha Levin was able to trigger that same warning, and was able to give me the filter string that triggered it. It was simply a single operation ">". I wrapped the filtering code in a userspace program such that I could single step through the logic. With a single operator the operand counter can legitimately go below zero, and should be reported to the user as an error, but should not produce a kernel warning. The WARN_ON_ONCE(cnt < 0) should be just a "if (cnt < 0) break;" and the code following it will produce the error message for the user. While debugging this, I found that there was another bug that let the pointer to the filter string go beyond the filter string. This too was fixed.
