2024-01-04bpfilter: remove bpfilterQuentin Deslandes
bpfilter was supposed to convert iptables filtering rules into BPF programs on the fly, from the kernel, through a usermode helper. The base code for the UMH was introduced in 2018, and couple of attempts (2, 3) tried to introduce the BPF program generate features but were abandoned. bpfilter now sits in a kernel tree unused and unusable, occasionally causing confusion amongst Linux users (4, 5). As bpfilter is now developed in a dedicated repository on GitHub (6), it was suggested a couple of times this year (LSFMM/BPF 2023, LPC 2023) to remove the deprecated kernel part of the project. This is the purpose of this patch. These Kconfig files are included from net/Kconfig, inside the if NET ... endif. Remove 'depends on NET', which we know it is already met. 2020-08-20bpf: Add kernel module with user mode driver that populates bpffs.Alexei Starovoitov
Add kernel module with user mode driver that populates bpffs with BPF iterators. $ mount bpffs /my/bpffs/ -t bpf $ ls -la /my/bpffs/ total 4 drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 0 Jul 2 00:27 . drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 4096 Jul 2 00:09 .. -rw------- 1 root root 0 Jul 2 00:27 maps.debug -rw------- 1 root root 0 Jul 2 00:27 progs.debug The user mode driver will load BPF Type Formats, create BPF maps, populate BPF maps, load two BPF programs, attach them to BPF iterators, and finally send two bpf_link IDs back to the kernel. The kernel will pin two bpf_links into newly mounted bpffs instance under names "progs.debug" and "maps.debug". These two files become human readable. $ cat /my/bpffs/progs.debug id name attached 11 dump_bpf_map bpf_iter_bpf_map 12 dump_bpf_prog bpf_iter_bpf_prog 27 test_pkt_access 32 test_main test_pkt_access test_pkt_access 33 test_subprog1 test_pkt_access_subprog1 test_pkt_access 34 test_subprog2 test_pkt_access_subprog2 test_pkt_access 35 test_subprog3 test_pkt_access_subprog3 test_pkt_access 36 new_get_skb_len get_skb_len test_pkt_access 37 new_get_skb_ifindex get_skb_ifindex test_pkt_access 38 new_get_constant get_constant test_pkt_access The BPF program dump_bpf_prog() in iterators.bpf.c is printing this data about all BPF programs currently loaded in the system. This information is unstable and will change from kernel to kernel as ".debug" suffix conveys. 2020-07-14bpfilter: Allow to build bpfilter_umh as a module without static libraryMasahiro Yamada
Originally, bpfilter_umh was linked with -static only when CONFIG_BPFILTER_UMH=y. Commit 8a2cc0505cc4 ("bpfilter: use 'userprogs' syntax to build bpfilter_umh") silently, accidentally dropped the CONFIG_BPFILTER_UMH=y test in the Makefile. Revive it in order to link it dynamically when CONFIG_BPFILTER_UMH=m. Since commit b1183b6dca3e ("bpfilter: check if $(CC) can link static libc in Kconfig"), the compiler must be capable of static linking to enable CONFIG_BPFILTER_UMH, but it requires more than needed. To loosen the compiler requirement, I changed the dependency as follows: depends on CC_CAN_LINK depends on m || CC_CAN_LINK_STATIC If CONFIG_CC_CAN_LINK_STATIC in unset, CONFIG_BPFILTER_UMH is restricted to 'm' or 'n'. In theory, CONFIG_CC_CAN_LINK is not required for CONFIG_BPFILTER_UMH=y, but I did not come up with a good way to describe it. 2020-05-26bpfilter: document build requirements for bpfilter_umhValdis Kl ē tnieks
It's not intuitively obvious that bpfilter_umh is a statically linked binary. Mention the toolchain requirement in the Kconfig help, so people have an easier time figuring out what's needed. 2020-05-17bpfilter: check if $(CC) can link static libc in KconfigMasahiro Yamada
On Fedora, linking static glibc requires the glibc-static RPM package, which is not part of the glibc-devel package. CONFIG_CC_CAN_LINK does not check the capability of static linking, so you can enable CONFIG_BPFILTER_UMH, then fail to build: HOSTLD net/bpfilter/bpfilter_umh /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lc collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status Add CONFIG_CC_CAN_LINK_STATIC, and make CONFIG_BPFILTER_UMH depend on it. 2019-07-08init/Kconfig: add CONFIG_CC_CAN_LINKMasahiro Yamada

2018-06-28bpfilter: check compiler capability in KconfigMasahiro Yamada
With the brand-new syntax extension of Kconfig, we can directly check the compiler capability in the configuration phase. If the cc-can-link.sh fails, the BPFILTER_UMH is automatically hidden by the dependency. I also deleted 'default n', which is no-op. 2018-05-23net: add skeleton of bpfilter kernel moduleAlexei Starovoitov
bpfilter.ko consists of bpfilter_kern.c (normal kernel module code) and user mode helper code that is embedded into bpfilter.ko The steps to build bpfilter.ko are the following: - main.c is compiled by HOSTCC into the bpfilter_umh elf executable file - with quite a bit of objcopy and Makefile magic the bpfilter_umh elf file is converted into bpfilter_umh.o object file with _binary_net_bpfilter_bpfilter_umh_start and _end symbols Example: $ nm ./bld_x64/net/bpfilter/bpfilter_umh.o 0000000000004cf8 T _binary_net_bpfilter_bpfilter_umh_end 0000000000004cf8 A _binary_net_bpfilter_bpfilter_umh_size 0000000000000000 T _binary_net_bpfilter_bpfilter_umh_start - bpfilter_umh.o and bpfilter_kern.o are linked together into bpfilter.ko bpfilter_kern.c is a normal kernel module code that calls the fork_usermode_blob() helper to execute part of its own data as a user mode process. Notice that _binary_net_bpfilter_bpfilter_umh_start - end is placed into .init.rodata section, so it's freed as soon as __init function of bpfilter.ko is finished. As part of __init the bpfilter.ko does first request/reply action via two unix pipe provided by fork_usermode_blob() helper to make sure that umh is healthy. If not it will kill it via pid. Later bpfilter_process_sockopt() will be called from bpfilter hooks in get/setsockopt() to pass iptable commands into umh via bpfilter.ko If admin does 'rmmod bpfilter' the __exit code bpfilter.ko will kill umh as well.
