2019-03-11perf script: Support insn output for normal samplesAndi Kleen
perf script -F +insn was only working for PT traces because the PT instruction decoder was filling in the insn/insn_len sample attributes. Support it for non PT samples too on x86 using the existing x86 instruction decoder. 2018-11-21perf vendor events: Add stepping in CPUID string for x86Kan Liang
The perf tools cannot find the proper event list for the Cascadelake server. Because the Cascadelake server and the Skylake server have the same CPU model number, which are used by the perf tools to find the event list. The stepping for Skylake server is up to 4. The stepping for Cascadelake server starts from 5. The stepping can be used to distinguish between them. The stepping is added in get_cpuid_str(). The stepping information for Skylake server is updated in mapfile.csv. A x86 specific strcmp_cpuid_cmp() function is added to handle two CPUID formats in mapfile.csv, "vendor-family-model-stepping" and "vendor-family-model": - If a cpuid-regular-expression from the mapfile.csv using the new stepping format, a cpuid-string generated on the machine must include stepping. Otherwise, it is a mismatch. - If the cpuid-regular-expression using the old non-stepping format, the stepping in the cpuid-string will be ignored. The script, using environment string "PERF_CPUID" without stepping on Skylake server, will be broken. If so, users must fix their scripts. 2018-07-30perf tools: Fix the build on the alpine:edge distroArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
The UAPI file byteorder/little_endian.h uses the __always_inline define without including the header where it is defined, linux/stddef.h, this ends up working in all the other distros because that file gets included seemingly by luck from one of the files included from little_endian.h. But not on Alpine:edge, that fails for all files where perf_event.h is included but linux/stddef.h isn't include before that. Adding the missing linux/stddef.h file where it breaks on Alpine:edge to fix that, in all other distros, that is just a very small header anyway. 2018-01-17perf record: Fix failed memory allocation for get_cpuid_strThomas Richter
In x86 architecture dependend part function get_cpuid_str() mallocs a 128 byte buffer, but does not check if the memory allocation succeeded or not. When the memory allocation fails, function __get_cpuid() is called with first parameter being a NULL pointer. However this function references its first parameter and operates on a NULL pointer which might cause core dumps. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. In order to successfully decode Intel PT traces, context switch events are needed from the moment the trace starts. Currently that is ensured by using the 'immediate' flag which enables the switch event when it is opened. However, since commit 86c2786994bd ("perf intel-pt: Add support for PERF_RECORD_SWITCH") that might not always happen. When tracing system-wide the context switch event is added to the tracking event which was not set as 'immediate'. Change that so it is. 2016-06-06perf stat: Basic support for TopDown in perf statAndi Kleen
Add basic plumbing for TopDown in perf stat TopDown is intended to replace the frontend cycles idle/ backend cycles idle metrics in standard perf stat output. These metrics are not reliable in many workloads, due to out of order effects. This implements a new --topdown mode in perf stat (similar to --transaction) that measures the pipe line bottlenecks using standardized formulas. The measurement can be all done with 5 counters (one fixed counter) The result are four metrics: FrontendBound, BackendBound, BadSpeculation, Retiring that describe the CPU pipeline behavior on a high level. The full top down methology has many hierarchical metrics. This implementation only supports level 1 which can be collected without multiplexing. A full implementation of top down on top of perf is available in pmu-tools toplev. (http://github.com/andikleen/pmu-tools) The current version works on Intel Core CPUs starting with Sandy Bridge, and Atom CPUs starting with Silvermont. In principle the generic metrics should be also implementable on other out of order CPUs. TopDown level 1 uses a set of abstracted metrics which are generic to out of order CPU cores (although some CPUs may not implement all of them): topdown-total-slots Available slots in the pipeline topdown-slots-issued Slots issued into the pipeline topdown-slots-retired Slots successfully retired topdown-fetch-bubbles Pipeline gaps in the frontend topdown-recovery-bubbles Pipeline gaps during recovery from misspeculation These metrics then allow to compute four useful metrics: FrontendBound, BackendBound, Retiring, BadSpeculation. Add a new --topdown options to enable events. When --topdown is specified set up events for all topdown events supported by the kernel. Add topdown-* as a special case to the event parser, as is needed for all events containing -. Due to a lack of foresight when Intel PT was implemented, those time members were recorded in the (implementation dependent) AUXTRACE_INFO event, the structure of which is generally inaccessible outside of the Intel PT decoder. However now the conversion between TSC and perf time is needed when processing a jitdump file when Intel PT has been used for tracing. So add a user event to record the time members. 'perf record' will synthesize the event if the information is available. And session processing will put a copy of the event on the session so that tools like 'perf inject' can easily access it. regs_query_register_offset() is a helper function which converts register name like "%rax" to offset of a register in 'struct pt_regs', which is required by BPF prologue generator. Since the function is identical, try to reuse the code in arch/x86/kernel/ptrace.c. Comment inside dwarf-regs.c list the differences between this implementation and kernel code. get_arch_regstr() switches to regoffset_table and the old string table is dropped. 2015-09-04perf intel-pt: Add support for PERF_RECORD_SWITCHAdrian Hunter
Add support for selecting and processing PERF_RECORD_SWITCH events for use by Intel PT. If they are available, they will be used in preference to sched_switch events. This enables an unprivileged user to trace multi-threaded or multi-process workloads with any level of perf_event_paranoid. However it depends on kernel support for PERF_RECORD_SWITCH. Without this patch, tracing a multi-threaded workload will decode without error but all the data will be attributed to the main thread. Without this patch, tracing a multi-process workload will result in decoder errors because the decoder will not know which executable is executing. There is a problem in the dwarf-regs.c files for sh, sparc and x86 where it is possible to make an out-of-bounds array access when searching for register names. This patch fixes it by replacing '<=' to '<', so when register (number == XXX_MAX_REGS), get_arch_regstr() will return NULL.
