2025-06-05riscv: ftrace: prepare ftrace for atomic code patchingAndy Chiu
We use an AUIPC+JALR pair to jump into a ftrace trampoline. Since instruction fetch can break down to 4 byte at a time, it is impossible to update two instructions without a race. In order to mitigate it, we initialize the patchable entry to AUIPC + NOP4. Then, the run-time code patching can change NOP4 to JALR to eable/disable ftrcae from a function. This limits the reach of each ftrace entry to +-2KB displacing from ftrace_caller. Starting from the trampoline, we add a level of indirection for it to reach ftrace caller target. Now, it loads the target address from a memory location, then perform the jump. This enable the kernel to update the target atomically. The new don't-stop-the-world text patching on change only one RISC-V instruction: | -8: &ftrace_ops of the associated tracer function. | <ftrace enable>: | 0: auipc t0, hi(ftrace_caller) | 4: jalr t0, lo(ftrace_caller) | | -8: &ftrace_nop_ops | <ftrace disable>: | 0: auipc t0, hi(ftrace_caller) | 4: nop This means that f+0x0 is fixed, and should not be claimed by ftrace, e.g. kprobe should be able to put a probe in f+0x0. Thus, we adjust the offset and MCOUNT_INSN_SIZE accordingly. I created a 1000-deep directory structure and then cd and ls through it. With this patch there was a 0.57% performance improvement. 2025-03-18riscv: ftrace: Add parentheses in macro definitions of make_call_t0 and ↵Juhan Jin
make_call_ra This patch adds parentheses to parameters caller and callee of macros make_call_t0 and make_call_ra. Every existing invocation of these two macros uses a single variable for each argument, so the absence of the parentheses seems okay. However, future invocations might use more complex expressions as arguments. For example, a future invocation might look like this: make_call_t0(a - b, c, call). Without parentheses in the macro definition, the macro invocation expands to: ... unsigned int offset = (unsigned long) c - (unsigned long) a - b; ... which is clearly wrong. The use of parentheses ensures arguments are correctly evaluated and potentially saves future users of make_call_t0 and make_call_ra debugging trouble. 2024-12-26tracing: Add ftrace_partial_regs() for converting ftrace_regs to pt_regsMasami Hiramatsu (Google)
Add ftrace_partial_regs() which converts the ftrace_regs to pt_regs. This is for the eBPF which needs this to keep the same pt_regs interface to access registers. Thus when replacing the pt_regs with ftrace_regs in fprobes (which is used by kprobe_multi eBPF event), this will be used. If the architecture defines its own ftrace_regs, this copies partial registers to pt_regs and returns it. If not, ftrace_regs is the same as pt_regs and ftrace_partial_regs() will return ftrace_regs::regs. 2024-10-15ftrace: Consolidate ftrace_regs accessor functions for archs using pt_regsSteven Rostedt
Most architectures use pt_regs within ftrace_regs making a lot of the accessor functions just calls to the pt_regs internally. Instead of duplication this effort, use a HAVE_ARCH_FTRACE_REGS for architectures that have their own ftrace_regs that is not based on pt_regs and will define all the accessor functions, and for the architectures that just use pt_regs, it will leave it undefined, and the default accessor functions will be used. Note, this will also make it easier to add new accessor functions to ftrace_regs as it will mean having to touch less architectures. 2024-10-10ftrace: Make ftrace_regs abstract from direct useSteven Rostedt
ftrace_regs was created to hold registers that store information to save function parameters, return value and stack. Since it is a subset of pt_regs, it should only be used by its accessor functions. But because pt_regs can easily be taken from ftrace_regs (on most archs), it is tempting to use it directly. But when running on other architectures, it may fail to build or worse, build but crash the kernel! Instead, make struct ftrace_regs an empty structure and have the architectures define __arch_ftrace_regs and all the accessor functions will typecast to it to get to the actual fields. This will help avoid usage of ftrace_regs directly. 2024-05-22ftrace: riscv: move from REGS to ARGSPuranjay Mohan
This commit replaces riscv's support for FTRACE_WITH_REGS with support for FTRACE_WITH_ARGS. This is required for the ongoing effort to stop relying on stop_machine() for RISCV's implementation of ftrace. The main relevant benefit that this change will bring for the above use-case is that now we don't have separate ftrace_caller and ftrace_regs_caller trampolines. This will allow the callsite to call ftrace_caller by modifying a single instruction. Now the callsite can do something similar to: When not tracing: | When tracing: func: func: auipc t0, ftrace_caller_top auipc t0, ftrace_caller_top nop <=========<Enable/Disable>=========> jalr t0, ftrace_caller_bottom [...] [...] The above assumes that we are dropping the support of calling a direct trampoline from the callsite. We need to drop this as the callsite can't change the target address to call, it can only enable/disable a call to a preset target (ftrace_caller in the above diagram). We can later optimize this by calling an intermediate dispatcher trampoline before ftrace_caller. Currently, ftrace_regs_caller saves all CPU registers in the format of struct pt_regs and allows the tracer to modify them. CALLER_ADDRx returns caller's address at specified level, they are used for several tracers. These macros eventually use __builtin_return_address(n) to get the caller's address if arch doesn't define their own implementation. In RISC-V, __builtin_return_address(n) only works when n == 0, we need to walk the stack frame to get the caller's address at specified level. data.level started from 'level + 3' due to the call flow of getting caller's address in RISC-V implementation. 2024-01-17riscv: ftrace: Add DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_DIRECT_CALLS supportSong Shuai
Select the DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_DIRECT_CALLS to provide the register_ftrace_direct[_multi] interfaces allowing users to register the customed trampoline (direct_caller) as the mcount for one or more target functions. And modify_ftrace_direct[_multi] are also provided for modifying direct_caller. To make the direct_caller and the other ftrace hooks (e.g. function/fgraph tracer, k[ret]probes) co-exist, a temporary register is nominated to store the address of direct_caller in ftrace_regs_caller. After the setting of the address direct_caller by direct_ops->func and the RESTORE_REGS in ftrace_regs_caller, direct_caller will be jumped to by the `jr` inst. Add DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_DIRECT_CALLS support for RISC-V. The graph_ops::func function can be used to install the return_hooker. This cleanup only changes the FTRACE_WITH_REGS implementation, leaving the mcount-based implementation is unaffected. 2023-10-12riscv: Fix ftrace syscall handling which are now prefixed with __riscv_Alexandre Ghiti
ftrace creates entries for each syscall in the tracefs but has failed since commit 08d0ce30e0e4 ("riscv: Implement syscall wrappers") which prefixes all riscv syscalls with __riscv_. So fix this by implementing arch_syscall_match_sym_name() which allows us to ignore this prefix. And also ignore compat syscalls like x86/arm64 by implementing arch_trace_is_compat_syscall(). We introduce a new structure called fgraph_ret_regs for the RISC-V platform to hold return registers and the frame pointer. We're currently using stop_machine() to update ftrace & kprobes, which means that the thread that takes text_mutex during may not be the same as the thread that eventually patches the code. This isn't actually a race because the lock is still held (preventing any other concurrent accesses) and there is only one thread running during stop_machine(), but it does trigger a lockdep failure. This patch just elides the lockdep check during stop_machine. Use a temporary register to reduce the size of detour code from 16 bytes to 8 bytes. The previous implementation is from 'commit afc76b8b8011 ("riscv: Using PATCHABLE_FUNCTION_ENTRY instead of MCOUNT")'. Before the patch: <func_prolog>: 0: REG_S ra, -SZREG(sp) 4: auipc ra, ? 8: jalr ?(ra) 12: REG_L ra, -SZREG(sp) (func_boddy) After the patch: <func_prolog>: 0: auipc t0, ? 4: jalr t0, ?(t0) (func_boddy) This patch not just reduces the size of detour code, but also fixes an important issue: An Ftrace callback registered with FTRACE_OPS_FL_IPMODIFY flag can actually change the instruction pointer, e.g. to "replace" the given kernel function with a new one, which is needed for livepatching, etc. In this case, the trampoline (ftrace_regs_caller) would not return to <func_prolog+12> but would rather jump to the new function. So, "REG_L ra, -SZREG(sp)" would not run and the original return address would not be restored. The kernel is likely to hang or crash as a result. This can be easily demonstrated if one tries to "replace", say, cmdline_proc_show() with a new function with the same signature using instruction_pointer_set(&fregs->regs, new_func_addr) in the Ftrace callback.
