2025-05-23PCI/AER: Convert aer_get_device_error_info(), aer_print_error() to indexBjorn Helgaas
Previously aer_get_device_error_info() and aer_print_error() took a pointer to struct aer_err_info and a pointer to a pci_dev. Typically the pci_dev was one of the elements of the aer_err_info.dev[] array (DPC was an exception, where the dev[] array was unused). Convert aer_get_device_error_info() and aer_print_error() to take an index into the aer_err_info.dev[] array instead. A future patch will add per-device ratelimit information, so the index makes it convenient to find the ratelimit associated with the device. To accommodate DPC, set info->dev[0] to the DPC port before using these interfaces. aer_print_error() produces output at a printk level (KERN_ERR/KERN_WARNING/ etc) that depends on the kind of error, and it calls pcie_print_tlp_log(), which previously always produced output at KERN_ERR. Add a "level" parameter so aer_print_error() can control the level of the pcie_print_tlp_log() output to match. DPC Error Source ID is only valid when the DPC Trigger Reason indicates that DPC was triggered due to reception of an ERR_NONFATAL or ERR_FATAL Message (PCIe r6.0, sec 7.9.14.5). When DPC was triggered by ERR_NONFATAL (PCI_EXP_DPC_STATUS_TRIGGER_RSN_NFE) or ERR_FATAL (PCI_EXP_DPC_STATUS_TRIGGER_RSN_FE) from a downstream device, log the Error Source ID (decoded into domain/bus/device/function). Don't print the source otherwise, since it's not valid. For DPC trigger due to reception of ERR_NONFATAL or ERR_FATAL, the dmesg logging changes: - pci 0000:00:01.0: DPC: containment event, status:0x000d source:0x0200 - pci 0000:00:01.0: DPC: ERR_FATAL detected + pci 0000:00:01.0: DPC: containment event, status:0x000d, ERR_FATAL received from 0000:02:00.0 and when DPC triggered for other reasons, where DPC Error Source ID is undefined, e.g., unmasked uncorrectable error: - pci 0000:00:01.0: DPC: containment event, status:0x0009 source:0x0200 - pci 0000:00:01.0: DPC: unmasked uncorrectable error detected + pci 0000:00:01.0: DPC: containment event, status:0x0009: unmasked uncorrectable error detected Previously the "containment event" message was at KERN_INFO and the "%s detected" message was at KERN_WARNING. 2025-02-21PCI/ERR: Handle TLP Log in Flit modeIlpo Järvinen
Flit mode introduced in PCIe r6.0 alters how the TLP Header Log is presented through AER and DPC Capability registers. The TLP Prefix Log Register is not present with Flit mode, and the register becomes an extension of the TLP Header Log (PCIe r6.1 secs 7.8.4.12 & 7.9.14.13). Adapt pcie_read_tlp_log() and struct pcie_tlp_log to read and store the extended TLP Header Log when the Link is in Flit mode. As the Prefix Log and Extended TLP Header are not present at the same time, a C union can be used. Determining whether the error occurred while the Link was in Flit mode is a bit complicated. In case of AER, the Advanced Error Capabilities and Control Register directly tells whether the error was logged in Flit mode or not (PCIe r6.1 sec 7.8.4.7). The DPC Capability (PCIe r6.1 sec 7.9.14), unfortunately, does not contain the same information. Unlike AER, the DPC Capability does not provide a way to discern whether the error was logged in Flit mode (this is confirmed by PCI WG to be an oversight in the spec). DPC will bring the Link down immediately following an error, which makes it impossible to acquire the Flit Mode Status directly from the Link Status 2 register because Flit Mode Status is only set in certain Link states (PCIe r6.1 sec 7.5.3.20). As a workaround, use the flit_mode value stored into the struct pci_bus. pcie_read_tlp_log() handles only 4 Header Log DWORDs but TLP Prefix Log (PCIe r6.1 secs 7.8.4.12 & 7.9.14.13) may also be present. Generalize pcie_read_tlp_log() and struct pcie_tlp_log to also handle TLP Prefix Log. The relevant registers are formatted identically in AER and DPC Capability, but has these variations: a) The offsets of TLP Prefix Log registers vary. b) DPC RP PIO TLP Prefix Log register can be < 4 DWORDs. c) AER TLP Prefix Log Present (PCIe r6.1 sec 7.8.4.7) can indicate Prefix Log is not present. Therefore callers must pass the offset of the TLP Prefix Log register and the entire length to pcie_read_tlp_log() to be able to read the correct number of TLP Prefix DWORDs from the correct offset. 2024-06-18PCI/DPC: Disable DPC service on suspendKai-Heng Feng
If the link is powered off during suspend, electrical noise may cause errors that trigger DPC. If the DPC interrupt is enabled and shares an IRQ with PME, that causes a spurious wakeup during suspend. Disable DPC triggering and the DPC interrupt during suspend to prevent this. Clear DPC interrupt status before re-enabling DPC interrupts during resume so we don't get an interrupt for errors that occurred during the suspend/resume process. 2024-02-28PCI/DPC: Ignore Surprise Down error on hot removalSmita Koralahalli
According to PCIe r6.0 sec 6.7.6 [1], async removal with DPC may result in surprise down error. This error is expected and is just a side-effect of async remove. Ignore surprise down error generated as a side-effect of async remove. Typically, this error is benign as the pciehp handler invoked by PDC or/and DLLSC alongside DPC, de-enumerates and brings down the device appropriately, but the error messages might confuse users. Get rid of these irritating log messages with a 1s delay while pciehp waits for DPC recovery. The implementation is as follows: On an async remove a DPC is triggered along with a Presence Detect State change and/or DLL State Change. Determine it's an async remove by checking for DPC Trigger Status in DPC Status Register and Surprise Down Error Status in AER Uncorrected Error Status to be non-zero. If true, treat the DPC event as a side-effect of async remove, clear the error status registers and continue with hot-plug tear down routines. If not, follow the existing routine to handle AER and DPC errors. Masking Surprise Down Errors was explored as an alternative approach, but discarded due to the odd behavior that masking only avoids the interrupt, but still records an error per PCIe r6.0, sec 6.2.3.2.2. That stale error would be reported the next time some error other than Surprise Down is handled. Add the iteration count based offset calculation into the config read. 2023-02-09PCI/DPC: Await readiness of secondary bus after resetLukas Wunner
pci_bridge_wait_for_secondary_bus() is called after a Secondary Bus Reset, but not after a DPC-induced Hot Reset. As a result, the delays prescribed by PCIe r6.0 sec 6.6.1 are not observed and devices on the secondary bus may be accessed before they're ready. One affected device is Intel's Ponte Vecchio HPC GPU. It comprises a PCIe switch whose upstream port is not immediately ready after reset. 2022-09-27PCI/DPC: Quirk PIO log size for certain Intel Root PortsMika Westerberg
Some Root Ports on Intel Tiger Lake and Alder Lake systems support the RP Extensions for DPC and the RP PIO Log registers but incorrectly advertise an RP PIO Log Size of zero. This means the kernel complains that: DPC: RP PIO log size 0 is invalid and if DPC is triggered, the DPC driver will not dump the RP PIO Log registers when it should. This is caused by a BIOS bug and should be fixed the BIOS for future CPUs. Add a quirk to set the correct RP PIO Log size for the affected Root Ports. 2021-11-18PCI/DPC: Use PCI_POSSIBLE_ERROR() to check config readsNaveen Naidu
When config pci_ops.read() can detect failed PCI transactions, the data returned to the CPU is PCI_ERROR_RESPONSE (~0 or 0xffffffff). Obviously a successful PCI config read may *also* return that data if a config register happens to contain ~0, so it doesn't definitively indicate an error unless we know the register cannot contain ~0. Use PCI_POSSIBLE_ERROR() to check the response we get when we read data from hardware. This unifies PCI error response checking and makes error checks consistent and easier to find. 2021-06-16PCI: pciehp: Ignore Link Down/Up caused by DPCLukas Wunner
Downstream Port Containment (PCIe r5.0, sec. 6.2.10) disables the link upon an error and attempts to re-enable it when instructed by the DPC driver. A slot which is both DPC- and hotplug-capable is currently powered off by pciehp once DPC is triggered (due to the link change) and powered back up on successful recovery. That's undesirable, the slot should remain powered so the hotplugged device remains bound to its driver. DPC notifies the driver of the error and of successful recovery in pcie_do_recovery() and the driver may then restore the device to working state. Moreover, Sinan points out that turning off slot power by pciehp may foil recovery by DPC: Power off/on is a cold reset concurrently to DPC's warm reset. Sathyanarayanan reports extended delays or failure in link retraining by DPC if pciehp brings down the slot. Fix by detecting whether a Link Down event is caused by DPC and awaiting recovery if so. On successful recovery, ignore both the Link Down and the subsequent Link Up event. Afterwards, check whether the link is down to detect surprise-removal or another DPC event immediately after DPC recovery. Ensure that the corresponding DLLSC event is not ignored by synthesizing it and invoking irq_wake_thread() to trigger a re-run of pciehp_ist(). The IRQ threads of the hotplug and DPC drivers, pciehp_ist() and dpc_handler(), race against each other. If pciehp is faster than DPC, it will wait until DPC recovery completes. Recovery consists of two steps: The first step (waiting for link disablement) is recognizable by pciehp through a set DPC Trigger Status bit. The second step (waiting for link retraining) is recognizable through a newly introduced PCI_DPC_RECOVERING flag. If DPC is faster than pciehp, neither of the two flags will be set and pciehp may glean the recovery status from the new PCI_DPC_RECOVERED flag. The flag is zero if DPC didn't occur at all, hence DLLSC events are not ignored by default. pciehp waits up to 4 seconds before assuming that DPC recovery failed and bringing down the slot. This timeout is not taken from the spec (it doesn't mandate one) but based on a report from Yicong Yang that DPC may take a bit more than 3 seconds on HiSilicon's Kunpeng platform. The timeout is necessary because the DPC Trigger Status bit may never clear: On Root Ports which support RP Extensions for DPC, the DPC driver polls the DPC RP Busy bit for up to 1 second before giving up on DPC recovery. Without the timeout, pciehp would then wait indefinitely for DPC to complete. 2020-09-17PCI: pciehp: Reduce noisiness on hot removalLukas Wunner
When a PCIe card is hot-removed, the Presence Detect State and Data Link Layer Link Active bits often do not clear simultaneously. I've seen delays of up to 244 msec between the two events with Thunderbolt. After pciehp has brought down the slot in response to the first event, the other bit may still be set. It's not discernible whether it's set because a new card is already in the slot or if it will soon clear. So pciehp tries to bring up the slot and in the latter case fails with a bunch of messages, some of them at KERN_ERR severity. If the slot is no longer occupied, the messages are false positives and annoy users. In a perfect world, we could avoid this by setting Link Disable on slot bringdown and re-enabling it upon a Presence Detect State change. In reality however, there are broken hotplug ports which hardwire Presence Detect to zero, see 80696f991424 ("PCI: pciehp: Tolerate Presence Detect hardwired to zero"). Conversely, PCIe r1.0 hotplug ports hardwire Link Active to zero because Link Active Reporting wasn't specified before PCIe r1.1. On unplug, some ports first clear Presence then Link (see Stuart Hayes' splat) whereas others use the inverse order (see Dongdong Liu's splat). To top it off, there are hotplug ports which flap the Presence and Link bits on slot bringup, see 6c35a1ac3da6 ("PCI: pciehp: Tolerate initially unstable link"). pciehp is designed to work with all of these variants. Surplus attempts at slot bringup are a lesser evil than not being able to bring up slots at all. Although we could try to perfect the behavior for specific hotplug controllers, we'd risk breaking others or increasing code complexity. But we can certainly minimize annoyance by emitting only a single message with KERN_INFO severity if bringup is unsuccessful: * Drop the "Timeout waiting for Presence Detect" message in pcie_wait_for_presence(). The sole caller of that function, pciehp_check_link_status(), ignores the timeout and carries on. It emits error messages of its own and I don't think this particular message adds much value. * There's a single error condition in pciehp_check_link_status() which does not emit a message. Adding one allows dropping the "Failed to check link status" message emitted by board_added() if pciehp_check_link_status() returns a non-zero integer. * Tone down all messages in pciehp_check_link_status() to KERN_INFO severity and rephrase them to look as innocuous as possible. To this end, move the message emitted by pcie_wait_for_link_delay() to its callers. Commit c100beb9ccfb ("PCI/AER: Use only _OSC to determine AER ownership") removed the use of HEST in determining AER ownership, but the AER driver still used HEST to verify AER ownership in some of its APIs. Per the ACPI spec v6.3, sec 18.3.2.4, some HEST table entries contain a FIRMWARE_FIRST bit, but that bit does not tell us anything about ownership of the AER capability. Remove parsing of HEST to look for FIRMWARE_FIRST. Add pcie_aer_is_native() for the places that need to know whether the OS owns the AER capability. If firmware controls DPC, it is generally responsible for managing the DPC capability and events, and the OS should not access the DPC capability. However, if firmware controls DPC and both the OS and the platform support Error Disconnect Recover (EDR) notifications, the OS EDR notify handler is responsible for recovery, and the notify handler may read/write the DPC capability until it clears the DPC Trigger Status bit. Previously we passed the PCIe service type parameter to pcie_do_recovery(), where reset_link() looked up the underlying pci_port_service_driver and its .reset_link() function pointer. Prior to eed85ff4c0da7 ("PCI/DPC: Enable DPC only if AER is available"), Linux handled DPC events regardless of whether firmware had granted it ownership of AER or DPC, e.g., via _OSC. PCIe r5.0, sec 6.2.10, recommends that the OS link control of DPC to control of AER, so after eed85ff4c0da7, Linux handles DPC events only if it has control of AER. On platforms that do not grant OS control of AER via _OSC, Linux DPC handling worked before eed85ff4c0da7 but not after. To make Linux DPC handling work on those platforms the same way they did before, add a "pcie_ports=dpc-native" kernel parameter that makes Linux handle DPC events regardless of whether it has control of AER. 2018-09-20PCI: portdrv: Initialize service drivers directlyKeith Busch
The PCI port driver saves the PCI state after initializing the device with the applicable service devices. This was, however, before the service drivers were even registered because PCI probe happens before the device_initcall initialized those service drivers. The config space state that the services set up were not being saved. The end result would cause PCI devices to not react to events that the drivers think they did if the PCI state ever needed to be restored. Fix this by changing the service drivers from using the init calls to having the portdrv driver calling the services directly. This will get the state saved as desired, while making the relationship between the port driver and the services under it more explicit in the code. Restructure the DPC code so it calls the same pcie_do_fatal_recovery() interface used by AER. This makes it clearer that we want to use the same path. Implement the .reset_link() method used by pcie_do_fatal_recovery(). For DPC, the actual reset is done automatically by hardware, so we really only have to wait for the Link to be inactive, then release the Port from DPC. PCIe ERR_NONFATAL errors mean a particular transaction is unreliable but the Link is otherwise fully functional (PCIe r4.0, sec 6.2.2). The AER driver handles these by logging the error details and calling driver-supplied pci_error_handlers callbacks. It does not reset downstream devices, does not remove them from the PCI subsystem, does not re-enumerate them, and does not call their driver .remove() or .probe() methods. But DPC driver previously enabled DPC on ERR_NONFATAL, so if the hardware supports DPC, these errors caused a Link reset (performed automatically by the hardware), followed by the DPC driver removing affected devices (which calls their .remove() methods), bringing the Link back up, and re-enumerating (which calls driver .probe() methods). Disable ERR_NONFATAL DPC triggering so these errors will only be handled by AER. This means drivers won't have to deal with different usage of their pci_error_handlers callbacks and .probe() and .remove() methods based on whether the platform has DPC support. The generic IRQ handling code ensures that an interrupt handler runs with its interrupt masked or disabled. If the interrupt is level-triggered, the interrupt handler must tell its device to stop asserting the interrupt before returning. If it doesn't, we will immediately take the interrupt again when the handler returns and the generic code unmasks the interrupt. The driver doesn't know whether its interrupt is edge- or level-triggered, so it must clear its interrupt source directly in its interrupt handler. Previously we cleared the DPC interrupt status in the bottom half, i.e., in deferred work, which can cause an interrupt storm if the DPC interrupt happens to be level-triggered, e.g., if we're using INTx instead of MSI. Clear the DPC interrupt status bit in the interrupt handler, not in the deferred work.
