2025-05-05crypto: mips/sha256 - implement library instead of shashEric Biggers
Instead of providing crypto_shash algorithms for the arch-optimized SHA-256 code, instead implement the SHA-256 library. This is much simpler, it makes the SHA-256 library functions be arch-optimized, and it fixes the longstanding issue where the arch-optimized SHA-256 was disabled by default. SHA-256 still remains available through crypto_shash, but individual architectures no longer need to handle it. 2025-04-16crypto: poly1305 - centralize the shash wrappers for arch codeEric Biggers
Following the example of the crc32, crc32c, and chacha code, make the crypto subsystem register both generic and architecture-optimized poly1305 shash algorithms, both implemented on top of the appropriate library functions. This eliminates the need for every architecture to implement the same shash glue code. Note that the poly1305 shash requires that the key be prepended to the data, which differs from the library functions where the key is simply a parameter to poly1305_init(). Previously this was handled at a fairly low level, polluting the library code with shash-specific code. Reorganize things so that the shash code handles this quirk itself. Also, to register the architecture-optimized shashes only when architecture-optimized code is actually being used, add a function poly1305_is_arch_optimized() and make each arch implement it. Change each architecture's Poly1305 module_init function to arch_initcall so that the CPU feature detection is guaranteed to run before poly1305_is_arch_optimized() gets called by crypto/poly1305.c. (In cases where poly1305_is_arch_optimized() just returns true unconditionally, using arch_initcall is not strictly needed, but it's still good to be consistent across architectures.) To register the architecture-optimized skciphers only when architecture-optimized code is actually being used, add a function chacha_is_arch_optimized() and make each arch implement it. Change each architecture's ChaCha module_init function to arch_initcall so that the CPU feature detection is guaranteed to run before chacha_is_arch_optimized() gets called by crypto/chacha.c. In the case of s390, remove the CPU feature based module autoloading, which is no longer needed since the module just gets pulled in via function linkage. The ARCH_MAY_HAVE patch missed arm64, mips and s390. But it may also lead to arch options being enabled but ineffective because of modular/built-in conflicts. As the primary user of all these options wireguard is selecting the arch options anyway, make the same selections at the lib/crypto option level and hide the arch options from the user. Instead of selecting them centrally from lib/crypto, simply set the default of each arch option as suggested by Eric Biggers. Change the Crypto API generic algorithms to select the top-level lib/crypto options instead of the generic one as otherwise there is no way to enable the arch options (Eric Biggers). Introduce a set of INTERNAL options to work around dependency cycles on the CONFIG_CRYPTO symbol. 2024-12-01mips/crc32: expose CRC32 functions through libEric Biggers
Move the mips CRC32 assembly code into the lib directory and wire it up to the library interface. This allows it to be used without going through the crypto API. It remains usable via the crypto API too via the shash algorithms that use the library interface. Thus all the arch-specific "shash" code becomes unnecessary and is removed. Commit ca459e5f826f ("crypto: mips/crc32 - Clean up useless assignment operations") changed crc32c_mips_le_hw() to use the instructions that use the "regular" CRC32 polynomial instead of the Castagnoli polynomial. Therefore it can't be computing CRC32C values correctly anymore. I haven't been successful in running a MIPS kernel in QEMU, but based on code review this is the fix that is needed. Commit 67512a8cf5a7 ("MIPS: Avoid macro redefinitions") changed how the MIPS register macros were defined, in order to allow the code to compile under LLVM/Clang. The MIPS CRC32 code however wasn't updated accordingly, causing a build bug when using a MIPS32r6 toolchain without CRC support. Update the CRC32 code to use the macros correctly, to fix the build failures. 2021-05-10asm-generic: unaligned always use struct helpersArnd Bergmann
As found by Vineet Gupta and Linus Torvalds, gcc has somewhat unexpected behavior when faced with overlapping unaligned pointers. The kernel's unaligned/access-ok.h header technically invokes undefined behavior that happens to usually work on the architectures using it, but if the compiler optimizes code based on the assumption that undefined behavior doesn't happen, it can create output that actually causes data corruption. A related problem was previously found on 32-bit ARMv7, where most instructions can be used on unaligned data, but 64-bit ldrd/strd causes an exception. The workaround was to always use the unaligned/le_struct.h helper instead of unaligned/access-ok.h, in commit 1cce91dfc8f7 ("ARM: 8715/1: add a private asm/unaligned.h"). The same solution should work on all other architectures as well, so remove the access-ok.h variant and use the other one unconditionally on all architectures, picking either the big-endian or little-endian version. With this, the arm specific header can be removed as well, and the only file including linux/unaligned/access_ok.h gets moved to including the normal file. Fortunately, this made almost no difference to the object code produced by gcc-11. On x86, s390, powerpc, and arc, the resulting binary appears to be identical to the previous version, while on arm64 and m68k there are minimal differences that looks like an optimization pass went into a different direction, usually using fewer stack spills on the new version. 2020-01-09crypto: remove CRYPTO_TFM_RES_BAD_KEY_LENEric Biggers
The CRYPTO_TFM_RES_BAD_KEY_LEN flag was apparently meant as a way to make the ->setkey() functions provide more information about errors. However, no one actually checks for this flag, which makes it pointless. Also, many algorithms fail to set this flag when given a bad length key. Reviewing just the generic implementations, this is the case for aes-fixed-time, cbcmac, echainiv, nhpoly1305, pcrypt, rfc3686, rfc4309, rfc7539, rfc7539esp, salsa20, seqiv, and xcbc. But there are probably many more in arch/*/crypto/ and drivers/crypto/. Some algorithms can even set this flag when the key is the correct length. For example, authenc and authencesn set it when the key payload is malformed in any way (not just a bad length), the atmel-sha and ccree drivers can set it if a memory allocation fails, and the chelsio driver sets it for bad auth tag lengths, not just bad key lengths. So even if someone actually wanted to start checking this flag (which seems unlikely, since it's been unused for a long time), there would be a lot of work needed to get it working correctly. But it would probably be much better to go back to the drawing board and just define different return values, like -EINVAL if the key is invalid for the algorithm vs. -EKEYREJECTED if the key was rejected by a policy like "no weak keys". That would be much simpler, less error-prone, and easier to test. So just remove this flag. For glue code that's used by Zinc, the actual Crypto API functions might not necessarily exist, and don't need to exist either. This is a straight import of the OpenSSL/CRYPTOGAMS Poly1305 implementation for MIPS authored by Andy Polyakov, a prior 64-bit only version of which has been contributed by him to the OpenSSL project. The file 'poly1305-mips.pl' is taken straight from this upstream GitHub repository [0] at commit d22ade312a7af958ec955620b0d241cf42c37feb, and already contains all the changes required to build it as part of a Linux kernel module. 2019-11-17crypto: mips/chacha - wire up accelerated 32r2 code from ZincArd Biesheuvel
This integrates the accelerated MIPS 32r2 implementation of ChaCha into both the API and library interfaces of the kernel crypto stack. The significance of this is that, in addition to becoming available as an accelerated library implementation, it can also be used by existing crypto API code such as Adiantum (for block encryption on ultra low performance cores) or IPsec using chacha20poly1305. These are use cases that have already opted into using the abstract crypto API. In order to support Adiantum, the core assembler routine has been adapted to take the round count as a function argument rather than hardcoding it to 20.
