2019-04-26drm/i915: Switch back to an array of logical per-engine HW contextsChris Wilson
We switched to a tree of per-engine HW context to accommodate the introduction of virtual engines. However, we plan to also support multiple instances of the same engine within the GEM context, defeating our use of the engine as a key to looking up the HW context. Just allocate a logical per-engine instance and always use an index into the ctx->engines[]. 2019-03-22drm/i915: Allow contexts to share a single timeline across all enginesChris Wilson
Previously, our view has been always to run the engines independently within a context. (Multiple engines happened before we had contexts and timelines, so they always operated independently and that behaviour persisted into contexts.) However, at the user level the context often represents a single timeline (e.g. GL contexts) and userspace must ensure that the individual engines are serialised to present that ordering to the client (or forgot about this detail entirely and hope no one notices - a fair ploy if the client can only directly control one engine themselves ;) In the next patch, we will want to construct a set of engines that operate as one, that have a single timeline interwoven between them, to present a single virtual engine to the user. (They submit to the virtual engine, then we decide which engine to execute on based.) To that end, we want to be able to create contexts which have a single timeline (fence context) shared between all engines, rather than multiple timelines. v2: Move the specialised timeline ordering to its own function. In later patches, it became apparent that userspace can see a partially constructed GEM context and begin using it before it was ready, to much hilarity. Close this window of opportunity by lifting the registration of the context with userspace (the insertion of the context into the filp's idr) to the very end of the CONTEXT_CREATE ioctl. 2019-03-08drm/i915: Move over to intel_context_lookup()Chris Wilson
In preparation for an ever growing number of engines and so ever increasing static array of HW contexts within the GEM context, move the array over to an rbtree, allocated upon first use. 2018-09-05drm/i915: Reduce context HW ID lifetimeChris Wilson
Future gen reduce the number of bits we will have available to differentiate between contexts, so reduce the lifetime of the ID assignment from that of the context to its current active cycle (i.e. only while it is pinned for use by the HW, will it have a constant ID). This means that instead of a max of 2k allocated contexts (worst case before fun with bit twiddling), we instead have a limit of 2k in flight contexts (minus a few that have been pinned by the kernel or by perf). To reduce the number of contexts id we require, we allocate a context id on first and mark it as pinned for as long as the GEM context itself is, that is we keep it pinned it while active on each engine. If we exhaust our context id space, then we try to reclaim an id from an idle context. In the extreme case where all context ids are pinned by active contexts, we force the system to idle in order to recover ids. To ease the frequent and ugly pointer dance of &request->gem_context->engine[request->engine->id] during request submission, store that pointer as request->hw_context. 2017-10-12drm/i915/selftests: Exercise adding requests to a full GGTTChris Wilson
A bug recently encountered involved the issue where are we were submitting requests to different ppGTT, each would pin a segment of the GGTT for its logical context and ring. However, this is invisible to eviction as we do not tie the context/ring VMA to a request and so do not automatically wait upon it them (instead they are marked as pinned, preventing eviction entirely). Instead the eviction code must flush those contexts by switching to the kernel context. 2017-08-18drm/i915: Replace execbuf vma ht with an idrChris Wilson
This was the competing idea long ago, but it was only with the rewrite of the idr as an radixtree and using the radixtree directly ourselves, along with the realisation that we can store the vma directly in the radixtree and only need a list for the reverse mapping, that made the patch performant enough to displace using a hashtable. Though the vma ht is fast and doesn't require any extra allocation (as we can embed the node inside the vma), it does require a thread for resizing and serialization and will have the occasional slow lookup. That is hairy enough to investigate alternatives and favour them if equivalent in peak performance. One advantage of allocating an indirection entry is that we can support a single shared bo between many clients, something that was done on a first-come first-serve basis for shared GGTT vma previously. To offset the extra allocations, we create yet another kmem_cache for them. 2017-06-16drm/i915: Store a direct lookup from object handle to vmaChris Wilson
The advent of full-ppgtt lead to an extra indirection between the object and its binding. That extra indirection has a noticeable impact on how fast we can convert from the user handles to our internal vma for execbuffer. In order to bypass the extra indirection, we use a resizable hashtable to jump from the object to the per-ctx vma. rhashtable was considered but we don't need the online resizing feature and the extra complexity proved to undermine its usefulness. Instead, we simply reallocate the hastable on demand in a background task and serialize it before iterating. In non-full-ppgtt modes, multiple files and multiple contexts can share the same vma. This leads to having multiple possible handle->vma links, so we only use the first to establish the fast path.
