"mm: ksm: prevent KSM from breaking merging of new VMAs" (Lorenzo Stoakes) addresses an issue with KSM's PR_SET_MEMORY_MERGE mode: newly mapped VMAs were not eligible for merging with existing adjacent VMAs. "mm/damon: introduce DAMON_STAT for simple and practical access monitoring" (SeongJae Park) adds a new kernel module which simplifies the setup and usage of DAMON in production environments. "stop passing a writeback_control to swap/shmem writeout" (Christoph Hellwig) is a cleanup to the writeback code which removes a couple of pointers from struct writeback_control. "drivers/base/node.c: optimization and cleanups" (Donet Tom) contains largely uncorrelated cleanups to the NUMA node setup and management code. "mm: userfaultfd: assorted fixes and cleanups" (Tal Zussman) does some maintenance work on the userfaultfd code. "Readahead tweaks for larger folios" (Ryan Roberts) implements some tuneups for pagecache readahead when it is reading into order>0 folios. "selftests/mm: Tweaks to the cow test" (Mark Brown) provides some cleanups and consistency improvements to the selftests code. "Optimize mremap() for large folios" (Dev Jain) does that. A 37% reduction in execution time was measured in a memset+mremap+munmap microbenchmark. "Remove zero_user()" (Matthew Wilcox) expunges zero_user() in favor of the more modern memzero_page(). "mm/huge_memory: vmf_insert_folio_*() and vmf_insert_pfn_pud() fixes" (David Hildenbrand) addresses some warts which David noticed in the huge page code. These were not known to be causing any issues at this time. "mm/damon: use alloc_migrate_target() for DAMOS_MIGRATE_{HOT,COLD" (SeongJae Park) provides some cleanup and consolidation work in DAMON. "use vm_flags_t consistently" (Lorenzo Stoakes) uses vm_flags_t in places where we were inappropriately using other types. "mm/memfd: Reserve hugetlb folios before allocation" (Vivek Kasireddy) increases the reliability of large page allocation in the memfd code. "mm: Remove pXX_devmap page table bit and pfn_t type" (Alistair Popple) removes several now-unneeded PFN_* flags. "mm/damon: decouple sysfs from core" (SeongJae Park) implememnts some cleanup and maintainability work in the DAMON sysfs layer. "madvise cleanup" (Lorenzo Stoakes) does quite a lot of cleanup/maintenance work in the madvise() code. "madvise anon_name cleanups" (Vlastimil Babka) provides additional cleanups on top or Lorenzo's effort. "Implement numa node notifier" (Oscar Salvador) creates a standalone notifier for NUMA node memory state changes. Previously these were lumped under the more general memory on/offline notifier. "Make MIGRATE_ISOLATE a standalone bit" (Zi Yan) cleans up the pageblock isolation code and fixes a potential issue which doesn't seem to cause any problems in practice. "selftests/damon: add python and drgn based DAMON sysfs functionality tests" (SeongJae Park) adds additional drgn- and python-based DAMON selftests which are more comprehensive than the existing selftest suite. "Misc rework on hugetlb faulting path" (Oscar Salvador) fixes a rather obscure deadlock in the hugetlb fault code and follows that fix with a series of cleanups. "cma: factor out allocation logic from __cma_declare_contiguous_nid" (Mike Rapoport) rationalizes and cleans up the highmem-specific code in the CMA allocator. "mm/migration: rework movable_ops page migration (part 1)" (David Hildenbrand) provides cleanups and future-preparedness to the migration code. "mm/damon: add trace events for auto-tuned monitoring intervals and DAMOS quota" (SeongJae Park) adds some tracepoints to some DAMON auto-tuning code. "mm/damon: fix misc bugs in DAMON modules" (SeongJae Park) does that. "mm/damon: misc cleanups" (SeongJae Park) also does what it claims. "mm: folio_pte_batch() improvements" (David Hildenbrand) cleans up the large folio PTE batching code. "mm/damon/vaddr: Allow interleaving in migrate_{hot,cold} actions" (SeongJae Park) facilitates dynamic alteration of DAMON's inter-node allocation policy. "Remove unmap_and_put_page()" (Vishal Moola) provides a couple of page->folio conversions. "mm: per-node proactive reclaim" (Davidlohr Bueso) implements a per-node control of proactive reclaim - beyond the current memcg-based implementation. "mm/damon: remove damon_callback" (SeongJae Park) replaces the damon_callback interface with a more general and powerful damon_call()+damos_walk() interface. "mm/mremap: permit mremap() move of multiple VMAs" (Lorenzo Stoakes) implements a number of mremap cleanups (of course) in preparation for adding new mremap() functionality: newly permit the remapping of multiple VMAs when the user is specifying MREMAP_FIXED. It still excludes some specialized situations where this cannot be performed reliably. "drop hugetlb_free_pgd_range()" (Anthony Yznaga) switches some sparc hugetlb code over to the generic version and removes the thus-unneeded hugetlb_free_pgd_range(). "mm/damon/sysfs: support periodic and automated stats update" (SeongJae Park) augments the present userspace-requested update of DAMON sysfs monitoring files. Automatic update is now provided, along with a tunable to control the update interval. "Some randome fixes and cleanups to swapfile" (Kemeng Shi) does what is claims. "mm: introduce snapshot_page" (Luiz Capitulino and David Hildenbrand) provides (and uses) a means by which debug-style functions can grab a copy of a pageframe and inspect it locklessly without tripping over the races inherent in operating on the live pageframe directly. "use per-vma locks for /proc/pid/maps reads" (Suren Baghdasaryan) addresses the large contention issues which can be triggered by reads from that procfs file. Latencies are reduced by more than half in some situations. The series also introduces several new selftests for the /proc/pid/maps interface. "__folio_split() clean up" (Zi Yan) cleans up __folio_split()! "Optimize mprotect() for large folios" (Dev Jain) provides some quite large (>3x) speedups to mprotect() when dealing with large folios. "selftests/mm: reuse FORCE_READ to replace "asm volatile("" : "+r" (XXX));" and some cleanup" (wang lian) does some cleanup work in the selftests code. "tools/testing: expand mremap testing" (Lorenzo Stoakes) extends the mremap() selftest in several ways, including adding more checking of Lorenzo's recently added "permit mremap() move of multiple VMAs" feature. "selftests/damon/sysfs.py: test all parameters" (SeongJae Park) extends the DAMON sysfs interface selftest so that it tests all possible user-requested parameters. 2025-07-15drm/v3d: Use DRM_GPU_SCHED_STAT_NO_HANG to skip the resetMaíra Canal
When a CL/CSD job times out, we check if the GPU has made any progress since the last timeout. If so, instead of resetting the hardware, we skip the reset and allow the timer to be rearmed. This gives long-running jobs a chance to complete. Instead of manipulating scheduler's internals, inform the scheduler that the job did not actually timeout and no reset was performed through the new status code DRM_GPU_SCHED_STAT_NO_HANG. 2025-07-15drm/sched: Rename DRM_GPU_SCHED_STAT_NOMINAL to DRM_GPU_SCHED_STAT_RESETMaíra Canal
Among the scheduler's statuses, the only one that indicates an error is DRM_GPU_SCHED_STAT_ENODEV. Any status other than DRM_GPU_SCHED_STAT_ENODEV signifies that the operation succeeded and the GPU is in a nominal state. However, to provide more information about the GPU's status, it is needed to convey more information than just "OK". Therefore, rename DRM_GPU_SCHED_STAT_NOMINAL to DRM_GPU_SCHED_STAT_RESET, which better communicates the meaning of this status. The status DRM_GPU_SCHED_STAT_RESET indicates that the GPU has hung, but it has been successfully reset and is now in a nominal state again. Original rationale for those had been the reduced cost of mntput() for the stuff that is mounted somewhere. Mount refcount increments and decrements are frequent; what's worse, they tend to concentrate on the same instances and cacheline pingpong is quite noticable. As the result, mount refcounts are per-cpu; that allows a very cheap increment. Plain decrement would be just as easy, but decrement-and-test is anything but (we need to add the components up, with exclusion against possible increment-from-zero, etc.). Fortunately, there is a very common case where we can tell that decrement won't be the final one - if the thing we are dropping is currently mounted somewhere. We have an RCU delay between the removal from mount tree and dropping the reference that used to pin it there, so we can just take rcu_read_lock() and check if the victim is mounted somewhere. If it is, we can go ahead and decrement without and further checks - the reference we are dropping is not the last one. If it isn't, we get all the fun with locking, carefully adding up components, etc., but the majority of refcount decrements end up taking the fast path. There is a major exception, though - pipes and sockets. Those live on the internal filesystems that are not going to be mounted anywhere. They are not going to be _un_mounted, of course, so having to take the slow path every time a pipe or socket gets closed is really obnoxious. Solution had been to mark them as long-lived ones - essentially faking "they are mounted somewhere" indicator. With minor modification that works even for ones that do eventually get dropped - all it takes is making sure we have an RCU delay between clearing the "mounted somewhere" indicator and dropping the reference. There are some additional twists (if you want to drop a dozen of such internal mounts, you'd be better off with clearing the indicator on all of them, doing an RCU delay once, then dropping the references), but in the basic form it had been * use kern_mount() if you want your internal mount to be a long-term one. * use kern_unmount() to undo that. Unfortunately, the things did rot a bit during the mount API reshuffling. In several cases we have lost the "fake the indicator" part; kern_unmount() on the unmount side remained (it doesn't warn if you use it on a mount without the indicator), but all benefits regaring mntput() cost had been lost. To get rid of that bitrot, let's add a new helper that would work with fs_context-based API: fc_mount_longterm(). It's a counterpart of fc_mount() that does, on success, mark its result as long-term. It must be paired with kern_unmount() or equivalents. 2025-05-28drm/sched: Store the drm client_id in drm_sched_fencePierre-Eric Pelloux-Prayer
This will be used in a later commit to trace the drm client_id in some of the gpu_scheduler trace events. This requires changing all the users of drm_sched_job_init to add an extra parameter. The newly added drm_client_id field in the drm_sched_fence is a bit of a duplicate of the owner one. One suggestion I received was to merge those 2 fields - this can't be done right now as amdgpu uses some special values (AMDGPU_FENCE_OWNER_*) that can't really be translated into a client id. Christian is working on getting rid of those; when it's done we should be able to squash owner/drm_client_id together. 2025-05-02drm/v3d: Add job to pending list if the reset was skippedMaíra Canal
When a CL/CSD job times out, we check if the GPU has made any progress since the last timeout. If so, instead of resetting the hardware, we skip the reset and let the timer get rearmed. This gives long-running jobs a chance to complete. However, when `timedout_job()` is called, the job in question is removed from the pending list, which means it won't be automatically freed through `free_job()`. Consequently, when we skip the reset and keep the job running, the job won't be freed when it finally completes. This situation leads to a memory leak, as exposed in [1] and [2]. Similarly to commit 704d3d60fec4 ("drm/etnaviv: don't block scheduler when GPU is still active"), this patch ensures the job is put back on the pending list when extending the timeout. In the case of MMU errors caused by the TFU unit, the client that causes the MMU error is expected to be reported. But in the case of MMU TFU errors, a non existing client was being reported. This happened because the client calculation was taking into account more than the bits 0-7 from the axi_id that were representing the client. [ 27.845132] v3d fec00000.v3d: MMU error from client ? (13) at 0x3bb1000, pte invalid Masking the bits and using the correct axi_id ranges fixes the calculation to report the real guilty client on V3D 4.1 and 4.2. 2025-03-23drm/v3d: Use V3D_SMS registers for power on/off and reset on V3D 7.xMaíra Canal
In addition to the standard reset controller, V3D 7.x requires configuring the V3D_SMS registers for proper power on/off and reset. Add the new registers to `v3d_regs.h` and ensure they are properly configured during device probing, removal, and reset. This change fixes GPU reset issues on the Raspberry Pi 5 (BCM2712). Without exposing these registers, a GPU reset causes the GPU to hang, stopping any further job execution and freezing the desktop GUI. The same issue occurs when unloading and loading the v3d driver. 2025-03-23drm/v3d: Associate a V3D tech revision to all supported devicesMaíra Canal
The V3D driver currently determines the GPU tech version (33, 41...) by reading a register. This approach has worked so far since this information wasn’t needed before powering on the GPU. V3D 7.1 introduces new registers that must be written to power on the GPU, requiring us to know the V3D version beforehand. To address this, associate each supported SoC with the corresponding VideoCore GPU version as part of the device data. To prevent possible mistakes, add an assertion to verify that the version specified in the device data matches the one reported by the hardware. If there is a mismatch, the kernel will trigger a warning. With the goal of maintaining consistency around the driver, use `enum v3d_gen` to assign values to `v3d->ver` and for comparisons with other V3D generations. Note that all mentions of unsupported or non-existing V3D generations (such as V3D 4.0) were removed by this commit and replaced with supported generations without functional changes. Similar to commit e4b5ccd392b9 ("drm/v3d: Ensure job pointer is set to NULL after job completion"), ensure the job pointer is set to `NULL` when a job's fence has an error. Failing to do so can trigger kernel warnings in specific scenarios, such as: 1. v3d_csd_job_run() assigns `v3d->csd_job = job` 2. CSD job exceeds hang limit, causing a timeout → v3d_gpu_reset_for_timeout() 3. GPU reset 4. drm_sched_resubmit_jobs() sets the job's fence to `-ECANCELED`. 5. v3d_csd_job_run() detects the fence error and returns NULL, not submitting the job to the GPU 6. User-space runs `modprobe -r v3d` 7. v3d_gem_destroy() v3d_gem_destroy() triggers a warning indicating that the CSD job never ended, as we didn't set `v3d->csd_job` to NULL after the timeout. The same can also happen to BIN, RENDER, and TFU jobs. 2025-03-13drm/v3d: Don't run jobs that have errors flagged in its fenceMaíra Canal
The V3D driver still relies on `drm_sched_increase_karma()` and `drm_sched_resubmit_jobs()` for resubmissions when a timeout occurs. The function `drm_sched_increase_karma()` marks the job as guilty, while `drm_sched_resubmit_jobs()` sets an error (-ECANCELED) in the DMA fence of that guilty job. Because of this, we must check whether the job’s DMA fence has been flagged with an error before executing the job. Otherwise, the same guilty job may be resubmitted indefinitely, causing repeated GPU resets. This patch adds a check for an error on the job's fence to prevent running a guilty job that was previously flagged when the GPU timed out. Note that the CPU and CACHE_CLEAN queues do not require this check, as their jobs are executed synchronously once the DRM scheduler starts them. After a job completes, the corresponding pointer in the device must be set to NULL. Failing to do so triggers a warning when unloading the driver, as it appears the job is still active. 2024-12-05drm/v3d: Enable Performance Counters before clearing themMaíra Canal
On the Raspberry Pi 5, performance counters are not being cleared when `v3d_perfmon_start()` is called, even though we write to the CLR register. As a result, their values accumulate until they overflow. The expected behavior is for performance counters to reset to zero at the start of a job. When the job finishes and the perfmon is stopped, the counters should accurately reflect the values for that specific job. To ensure this behavior, the performance counters are now enabled before being cleared. This allows the CLR register to function as intended, zeroing the counter values when the job begins. The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a comment to that effect: /* * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove(). * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped. */ This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with '.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs to make things line up. I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used spaces to line things up. Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this is the end result. Fix the performance counter source settings on V3D 7.x by introducing a new macro, `V3D_SET_FIELD_VER`, which allows fields setting to vary by version. Using this macro, we can provide different values for source mask based on the V3D version, ensuring that sources are correctly configure on V3D 7.x. Therefore, we can force the creation of large pages allocated contiguously by using a mountpoint with "huge=within_size" enabled. Therefore, as V3D has a mountpoint with "huge=within_size" (if user has THP enabled), use this mountpoint for BO creation if available. This will allow us to create large pages allocated contiguously and make use of Big/Super Pages. The V3D MMU also supports 64KB and 1MB pages, called big and super pages, respectively. In order to set a 64KB page or 1MB page in the MMU, we need to make sure that page table entries for all 4KB pages within a big/super page must be correctly configured. In order to create a big/super page, we need a contiguous memory region. That's why we use a separate mountpoint with THP enabled. In order to place the page table entries in the MMU, we iterate over the 16 4KB pages (for big pages) or 256 4KB pages (for super pages) and insert the PTE. 2024-09-25drm/v3d: Reduce the alignment of the node allocationMaíra Canal
Currently, we are using an alignment of 128 kB to insert a node, which ends up wasting memory as we perform plenty of small BOs allocations (<= 4 kB). We require that allocations are aligned to 128Kb so for any allocation smaller than that, we are wasting the difference. This implies that we cannot effectively use the whole 4 GB address space available for the GPU in the RPi 4. Currently, we can allocate up to 32000 BOs of 4 kB (~140 MB) and 3000 BOs of 400 kB (~1,3 GB). This can be quite limiting for applications that have a high memory requirement, such as vkoverhead [1]. By reducing the page alignment to 4 kB, we can allocate up to 1000000 BOs of 4 kB (~4 GB) and 10000 BOs of 400 kB (~4 GB). Moreover, by performing benchmarks, we were able to attest that reducing the page alignment to 4 kB can provide a general performance improvement in OpenGL applications (e.g. glmark2). Therefore, this patch reduces the alignment of the node allocation to 4 kB, which will allow RPi users to explore the whole 4GB virtual address space provided by the hardware. Also, this patch allow users to fully run vkoverhead in the RPi 4/5, solving the issue reported in [1].
