2025-03-10drm/vmwgfx: Refactor cursor handlingZack Rusin
Refactor cursor handling to make the code maintainable again. Over the last 12 years the svga device improved support for virtualized cursors and at the same time the drm interfaces evolved quite a bit from pre-atomic to current atomic ones. vmwgfx only added new code over the years, instead of adjusting/refactoring the paths. Export the cursor plane handling to its own file. Remove special handling of the legacy cursor support to make it fit within the global cursor plane mechanism. Finally redo dirty tracking because memcmp never worked correctly resulting in the cursor not being properly updated in the guest. 2024-12-03drm/vmwgfx: Remove initialization of connector statusThomas Zimmermann
Remove the connector-status initialization from several of vmwgfx's functions. It is not required by the driver or DRM helpers. DRM initializes the connector to unknown status in __drm_connector_init() and reads the physical status when DRM clients or the user needs the information, or if it detects/polls a change to the status. 2024-08-26drm/vmwgfx: Fix prime with external buffersZack Rusin
Make sure that for external buffers mapping goes through the dma_buf interface instead of trying to access pages directly. External buffers might not provide direct access to readable/writable pages so to make sure the bo's created from external dma_bufs can be read dma_buf interface has to be used. Fixes crashes in IGT's kms_prime with vgem. Regular desktop usage won't trigger this due to the fact that virtual machines will not have multiple GPUs but it enables better test coverage in IGT. 2024-07-25drm/vmwgfx: Trigger a modeset when the screen movesIan Forbes
When multi-monitor is cycled the X,Y position of the Screen Target will likely change but the resolution will not. We need to trigger a modeset when this occurs in order to recreate the Screen Target with the correct X,Y position. Fixes a bug where multiple displays are shown in a single scrollable host window rather than in 2+ windows on separate host displays. 2024-07-24drm/vmwgfx: Fix handling of dumb buffersZack Rusin
Dumb buffers can be used in kms but also through prime with gallium's resource_from_handle. In the second case the dumb buffers can be rendered by the GPU where with the regular DRM kms interfaces they are mapped and written to by the CPU. Because the same buffer can be written to by the GPU and CPU vmwgfx needs to use vmw_surface (object which properly tracks dirty state of the guest and gpu memory) instead of vmw_bo (which is just guest side memory). Furthermore the dumb buffer handles are expected to be gem objects by a lot of userspace. Make vmwgfx accept gem handles in prime and kms but internally switch to vmw_surface's to properly track the dirty state of the objects between the GPU and CPU. Fixes new kwin and kde on wayland. 2024-06-05drm/vmwgfx: Don't destroy Screen Target when CRTC is enabled but inactiveIan Forbes
drm_crtc_helper_funcs::atomic_disable can be called even when the CRTC is still enabled. This can occur when the mode changes or the CRTC is set as inactive. In the case where the CRTC is being set as inactive we only want to blank the screen. The Screen Target should remain intact as long as the mode has not changed and CRTC is enabled. This fixes a bug with GDM where locking the screen results in a permanent black screen because the Screen Target is no longer defined. 2024-06-05drm/vmwgfx: Filter modes which exceed graphics memoryIan Forbes
SVGA requires individual surfaces to fit within graphics memory (max_mob_pages) which means that modes with a final buffer size that would exceed graphics memory must be pruned otherwise creation will fail. Additionally llvmpipe requires its buffer height and width to be a multiple of its tile size which is 64. As a result we have to anticipate that llvmpipe will round up the mode size passed to it by the compositor when it creates buffers and filter modes where this rounding exceeds graphics memory. This fixes an issue where VMs with low graphics memory (< 64MiB) configured with high resolution mode boot to a black screen because surface creation fails. 2024-04-15drm/vmwgfx: Implement virtual crc generationZack Rusin
crc checksums are used to validate the output. Normally they're part of the actual display hardware but on virtual stack there's nothing to automatically generate them. Implement crc generation for the vmwgfx stack. This works only on screen targets, where it's possibly to easily make sure that the guest side contents of the surface matches the host sides output. Just like the vblank support, crc generation can only be enabled via: guestinfo.vmwgfx.vkms_enable = "TRUE" option in the vmx file. Makes IGT's kms_pipe_crc_basic pass and allows a huge number of other IGT tests which require CRC generation of the output to actually run on vmwgfx. Makes it possible to actually validate a lof of the kms and drm functionality with vmwgfx. 2024-04-15drm/vmwgfx: Implement virtual kmsZack Rusin
By default vmwgfx doesn't support vblanking or crc generation which makes it impossible to use various IGT tests to validate vmwgfx. Implement virtual kernel mode setting, which is mainly related to simulated vblank support. Code is very similar to amd's vkms and the vkms module itself, except that it's integrated with vmwgfx three different output technologies - legacy, screen object and screen targets. Make IGT's kms_vblank pass on vmwgfx and allows a lot of other IGT tests to run with vmwgfx. Support for vkms needs to be manually enabled by adding: guestinfo.vmwgfx.vkms_enable = "TRUE" somewhere in the vmx file, otherwise it's off by default. 2023-02-13drm/vmwgfx: Stop using raw ttm_buffer_object'sZack Rusin
Various bits of the driver used raw ttm_buffer_object instead of the driver specific vmw_bo object. All those places used to duplicate the mapped bo caching policy of vmw_bo. Instead of duplicating all of that code and special casing various functions to work both with vmw_bo and raw ttm_buffer_object's unify the buffer object handling code. As part of that work fix the naming of bo's, e.g. insted of generic backup use 'guest_memory' because that's what it really is. All of it makes the driver easier to maintain and the code easier to read. Saves 100+ loc as well. 2023-02-13drm/vmwgfx: Abstract placement selectionZack Rusin
Problem with explicit placement selection in vmwgfx is that by the time the buffer object needs to be validated the information about which placement was supposed to be used is lost. To workaround this the driver had a bunch of state in various places e.g. as_mob or cpu_blit to somehow convey the information on which placement was intended. Fix it properly by allowing the buffer objects to hold their preferred placement so it can be reused whenever needed. This makes the entire validation pipeline a lot easier both to understand and maintain. The rest of the drivers which are using ttm have mostly standardized on driver_prefix_bo as the name for subclasses of the TTM buffer object. Make vmwgfx match the rest of the drivers and follow the same naming semantics. This is especially clear given that the name of the file in which the object was defined is vmw_bo.c. 2022-10-25drm/vmwgfx: Remove explicit and broken vblank handlingZack Rusin
The explicit vblank handling was never finished. The driver never had the full implementation of vblank and what was there is emulated by DRM when the driver doesn't pretend to be implementing it itself. Let DRM handle the vblank emulation and stop pretending the driver is doing anything special with vblank. In the future it would make sense to implement helpers for full vblank handling because vkms and amdgpu_vkms already have that code. Exporting it to common helpers and having all three drivers share it would make sense (that would be largely just to allow more of igt to run). 2022-03-11drm/vmwgfx: Stop using surface dma commands on most configurationsZack Rusin
Initial version of guest backed objects in the host had some performance issues that made using surface-dma's instead of direct copies faster. Surface dma's force a migration to vram which at best is slow and at worst is impossible (e.g. on svga3 where there's not enough vram to migrate fb's to it). Slowly migrate away from surface dma's to direct copies by limiting their usage to systems with more than 32MB of vram. 2021-12-09drm/vmwgfx: Remove the dedicated memory accountingZack Rusin
vmwgfx shared very elaborate memory accounting with ttm. It was moved from ttm to vmwgfx in change f07069da6b4c ("drm/ttm: move memory accounting into vmwgfx v4") but because of complexity it was hard to maintain. Some parts of the code weren't freeing memory correctly and some were missing accounting all together. While those would be fairly easy to fix the fundamental reason for memory accounting in the driver was the ability to invoke shrinker which is part of TTM code as well (with support for unified memory hopefully coming soon). That meant that vmwgfx had a lot of code that was either unused or duplicating code from TTM. Removing this code also prevents excessive calls to global swapout which were common during memory pressure because both vmwgfx and TTM would invoke the shrinker when memory usage reached half of RAM. 2021-07-28drm/vmwgfx: Cleanup loggingZack Rusin
The code was using the old DRM logging functions, which made it hard to figure out what was coming from vmwgfx. The newer logging helpers include the driver name in the logs and make it explicit which driver they're coming from. This allows us to standardize our logging a bit and clean it up in the process. vmwgfx is a little special because technically the hardware it's running on can be anything from the last 12 years or so which is why we need to include capabilities in the logs in the first place or otherwise we'd have no way of knowing what were the capabilities of the platform the guest was running in. Historically our device headers have been forked versions of the internal device headers, this has made maintaining them a bit of a burden. To fix the situation, going forward, the device headers will be verbatim copies of the internal headers. To do that the driver code has to be adapted to use pristine device headers. This will make future update to the device headers trivial and automatic. Some of the changes include using MMIO for register accesses instead of ioports, deprecating the FIFO MMIO and removing a lot of the old and legacy functionality. 2021-02-25drm: Use state helper instead of the plane state pointerMaxime Ripard
Many drivers reference the plane->state pointer in order to get the current plane state in their atomic_update or atomic_disable hooks, which would be the new plane state in the global atomic state since _swap_state happened when those hooks are run. Use the drm_atomic_get_new_plane_state helper to get that state to make it more obvious. Lets try to cleanup the usage of the term FIFO which we used for both our MMIO based cmd queue processing and for general command processing which could have been using command buffers interface. We're going to rename the functions which are processing commands (and work either via MMIO or command buffers) as _cmd_ and functions which operate on the MMIO based commands as FIFO to match the SVGA device naming. The assignment of metadata overwrote the new display resolution values, hence we'd miss the size actually changed and wouldn't redefine the surface. When we refuse DMA from system pages for whatever reason, we don't handle that correctly when guest-backed objects was enabled. Currently we flag resources as dirty (GPU contents not yet read back to the backing MOB) whenever they have been part of a command stream. Obviously many resources can't be dirty and others can only be dirty when written to by the GPU. That is when they are either bound to the context as render-targets, depth-stencil, copy / clear destinations and stream-output targets, or similarly when there are corresponding views into them. So mark resources dirty only in these special cases. Context- and cotable resources are always marked dirty when referenced. This is important for upcoming emulated coherent memory, since we can avoid issuing automatic readbacks to non-dirty resources when the CPU tries to access part of the backing MOB.
