2025-07-18HID: apple: validate feature-report field count to prevent NULL pointer ↵Qasim Ijaz
dereference A malicious HID device with quirk APPLE_MAGIC_BACKLIGHT can trigger a NULL pointer dereference whilst the power feature-report is toggled and sent to the device in apple_magic_backlight_report_set(). The power feature-report is expected to have two data fields, but if the descriptor declares one field then accessing field[1] and dereferencing it in apple_magic_backlight_report_set() becomes invalid since field[1] will be NULL. An example of a minimal descriptor which can cause the crash is something like the following where the report with ID 3 (power report) only references a single 1-byte field. When hid core parses the descriptor it will encounter the final feature tag, allocate a hid_report (all members of field[] will be zeroed out), create field structure and populate it, increasing the maxfield to 1. The subsequent field[1] access and dereference causes the crash. Usage Page (Vendor Defined 0xFF00) Usage (0x0F) Collection (Application) Report ID (1) Usage (0x01) Logical Minimum (0) Logical Maximum (255) Report Size (8) Report Count (1) Feature (Data,Var,Abs) Usage (0x02) Logical Maximum (32767) Report Size (16) Report Count (1) Feature (Data,Var,Abs) Report ID (3) Usage (0x03) Logical Minimum (0) Logical Maximum (1) Report Size (8) Report Count (1) Feature (Data,Var,Abs) End Collection Here we see the KASAN splat when the kernel dereferences the NULL pointer and crashes: [ 15.164723] Oops: general protection fault, probably for non-canonical address 0xdffffc0000000006: 0000 [#1] SMP KASAN NOPTI [ 15.165691] KASAN: null-ptr-deref in range [0x0000000000000030-0x0000000000000037] [ 15.165691] CPU: 0 UID: 0 PID: 10 Comm: kworker/0:1 Not tainted 6.15.0 #31 PREEMPT(voluntary) [ 15.165691] Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.16.2-debian-1.16.2-1 04/01/2014 [ 15.165691] RIP: 0010:apple_magic_backlight_report_set+0xbf/0x210 [ 15.165691] Call Trace: [ 15.165691] <TASK> [ 15.165691] apple_probe+0x571/0xa20 [ 15.165691] hid_device_probe+0x2e2/0x6f0 [ 15.165691] really_probe+0x1ca/0x5c0 [ 15.165691] __driver_probe_device+0x24f/0x310 [ 15.165691] driver_probe_device+0x4a/0xd0 [ 15.165691] __device_attach_driver+0x169/0x220 [ 15.165691] bus_for_each_drv+0x118/0x1b0 [ 15.165691] __device_attach+0x1d5/0x380 [ 15.165691] device_initial_probe+0x12/0x20 [ 15.165691] bus_probe_device+0x13d/0x180 [ 15.165691] device_add+0xd87/0x1510 [...] To fix this issue we should validate the number of fields that the backlight and power reports have and if they do not have the required number of fields then bail. Currently, the battery timer is set up for all devices using hid-apple, irrespective of whether they actually have a battery or not. APPLE_RDESC_BATTERY is a quirk that indicates the device has a battery and needs the battery timer. This patch checks for this quirk before setting up the timer, ensuring that only devices with a battery will have the timer set up. There has been a continuous increase in the number of devices requiring hid-apple driver during the last few years. For such large table, its now more suitable to use switch case instead of if else if for improved readability. 2025-03-04HID: apple: disable Fn key handling on the Omoton KB066Alex Henrie
Remove the fixup to make the Omoton KB066's F6 key F6 when not holding Fn. That was really just a hack to allow typing F6 in fnmode>0, and it didn't fix any of the other F keys that were likewise untypable in fnmode>0. Instead, because the Omoton's Fn key is entirely internal to the keyboard, completely disable Fn key translation when an Omoton is detected, which will prevent the hid-apple driver from interfering with the keyboard's built-in Fn key handling. All of the F keys, including F6, are then typable when Fn is held. The Omoton KB066 and the Apple A1255 both have HID product code 05ac:022c. The self-reported name of every original A1255 when they left the factory was "Apple Wireless Keyboard". By default, Mac OS changes the name to "<username>'s keyboard" when pairing with the keyboard, but Mac OS allows the user to set the internal name of Apple keyboards to anything they like. The Omoton KB066's name, on the other hand, is not configurable: It is always "Bluetooth Keyboard". Because that name is so generic that a user might conceivably use the same name for a real Apple keyboard, detect Omoton keyboards based on both having that exact name and having HID product code 022c. Fixes: 819083cb6eed ("HID: apple: fix up the F6 key on the Omoton KB066 keyboard") Signed-off-by: Alex Henrie <alexhenrie24@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Aditya Garg <gargaditya08@live.com> Signed-off-by: Jiri Kosina <jkosina@suse.com>
2025-02-07HID: apple: fix up the F6 key on the Omoton KB066 keyboardAlex Henrie
The Omoton KB066 is an Apple A1255 keyboard clone (HID product code 05ac:022c). On both keyboards, the F6 key becomes Num Lock when the Fn key is held. But unlike its Apple exemplar, when the Omoton's F6 key is pressed without Fn, it sends the usage code 0xC0301 from the reserved section of the consumer page instead of the standard F6 usage code 0x7003F from the keyboard page. The nonstandard code is translated to KEY_UNKNOWN and becomes useless on Linux. The Omoton KB066 is a pretty popular keyboard, judging from its 29,058 reviews on Amazon at time of writing, so let's account for its quirk to make it more usable. By the way, it would be nice if we could automatically set fnmode to 0 for Omoton keyboards because they handle the Fn key internally and the kernel's Fn key handling creates undesirable side effects such as making F1 and F2 always Brightness Up and Brightness Down in fnmode=1 (the default) or always F1 and F2 in fnmode=2. Unfortunately I don't think there's a way to identify Bluetooth keyboards more specifically than the HID product code which is obviously inaccurate. Users of Omoton keyboards will just have to set fnmode to 0 manually to get full Fn key functionality. By allowing the drivers to return a "const *" they can constify their static report arrays. T2 chip The iso_layout parameter must be manually set to get the driver to swap KEY_102ND and KEY_GRAVE. This patch eliminates the need to do that. This is safe to do, as Macs with keyboards that do not need the quirk will keep working the same way as the value of hid->country will be different than HID_COUNTRY_INTERNATIONAL_ISO. 2022-11-02HID: apple: fix key translations where multiple quirks attempt to translate ↵Kerem Karabay
the same key The hid-apple driver does not support chaining translations or dependencies on other translations. This creates two problems: 1 - In Non-English keyboards of Macs, KEY_102ND and KEY_GRAVE are swapped and the APPLE_ISO_TILDE_QUIRK is used to work around this problem. The quirk is not set for the Macs where these bugs happen yet (see the 2nd patch for that), but this can be forced by setting the iso_layout parameter. Unfortunately, this only partially works. KEY_102ND gets translated to KEY_GRAVE, but KEY_GRAVE does not get translated to KEY_102ND, so both of them end up functioning as KEY_GRAVE. This is because the driver translates the keys as if Fn was pressed and the original is sent if it is not pressed, without any further translations happening on the key[#463]. KEY_GRAVE is present at macbookpro_no_esc_fn_keys[#195], so this is what happens: - KEY_GRAVE -> KEY_ESC (as if Fn is pressed) - KEY_GRAVE is returned (Fn isn't pressed, so translation is discarded) - KEY_GRAVE -> KEY_102ND (this part is not reached!) ... 2 - In case the touchbar does not work, the driver supports sending Escape when Fn+KEY_GRAVE is pressed. As mentioned previously, KEY_102ND is actually KEY_GRAVE and needs to be translated before this happens. Normally, these are the steps that should happen: - KEY_102ND -> KEY_GRAVE - KEY_GRAVE -> KEY_ESC (Fn is pressed) - KEY_ESC is returned Though this is what happens instead, as dependencies on other translations are not supported: - KEY_102ND -> KEY_ESC (Fn is pressed) - KEY_ESC is returned This patch fixes both bugs by ordering the translations correctly and by making the translations continue and not return immediately after translating a key so that chained translations work and translations can depend on other ones. This patch also simplifies the implementation of the swap_fn_leftctrl option a little bit, as it makes it simply use a normal translation instead adding extra code to translate a key to KEY_FN[#381]. This change wasn't put in another patch as the code that translates the Fn key needs to be changed because of the changes in the patch, and those changes would be discarded with the next patch anyway (the part that originally translates KEY_FN to KEY_LEFTCTRL needs to be made an else-if branch of the part that transltes KEY_LEFTCTRL to KEY_FN). 2022-05-11HID: apple: Properly handle function keys on Keychron keyboardsBryan Cain
Keychron's C-series and K-series of keyboards copy the vendor and product IDs of an Apple keyboard, but only behave like that device when set to "Mac" mode. In "Windows" mode, the Fn key doesn't generate a scancode, so it's impossible to use the F1-F12 keys when fnmode is set to its default value of 1. To fix this, make fnmode default to the new value of 3, which behaves like fnmode=2 for Keychron keyboards and like fnmode=1 for actual Apple keyboards. This way, Keychron devices are fully usable in both "Windows" and "Mac" modes, while behavior is unchanged for everything else. Like the Apple Magic Keyboard 2015, when connected over USB, the 2021 version with fingerprint reader registers 2 different interfaces. One of them is used to report the battery level. However, unlike when connected over Bluetooth, the battery level is not reported automatically and it is required to fetch it manually. The Magic Keyboard 2015 function key mapping was not present and the default mapping was used. 2022-02-16HID: apple: Magic Keyboard first generation FN key mappingJosé Expósito
The function key mapping for the Magic Keyboard first generation (2007, 2009 and 2011 aluminum wireless models) was not present and the default one was used instead. This caused two main issues: - The F5 and F6 keys were sending KEY_KBDILLUMDOWN and KEY_KBDILLUMUP; however, the keyboard is not backlited. - The keyboard has the APPLE_NUMLOCK_EMULATION quirk with F6 set as the KEY_NUMLOCK key by "powerbook_numlock_keys". However, because F6 was mapped to KEY_KBDILLUMUP by the default mapping it was not possible to switch the numlock status. This means that, if numlock was enabled on session startup, it was not possible to disable it without connecting another keyboard. Add a custom translation table for the device leaving F5 unassigned and using F6 as the KEY_NUMLOCK key.
