2025-06-26perf test: Change all remaining #!/bin/sh to #!/bin/bashJames Clark
There are 43 instances of posix shell tests and 35 instances of bash. To give us a single consistent language for testing in, replace all #!/bin/sh to #!/bin/bash. Common sources that are included in both different shells will now work as expected. And we no longer have to fix up bashisms that appear to work when someone's system has sh symlinked to bash, but don't work on other systems that have both shells installed. Although we could have chosen sh, it's not backwards compatible so it wouldn't be possible to bulk convert without re-writing the existing bash tests. Choosing bash also gives us some nicer features including 'local' variable definitions and regexes in if statements that are already widely used in the tests. It's not expected that there are any users with only sh available due to the large number of bash tests that exist. Discussed in relation to running shellcheck here: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-perf-users/e3751a74be34bbf3781c4644f518702a7270220b.1749785642.git.collin.funk1@gmail.com/ Signed-off-by: James Clark <james.clark@linaro.org> Reviewed-by: Collin Funk <collin.funk1@gmail.com> Acked-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20250623-james-perf-bash-tests-v1-1-f572f54d4559@linaro.org Signed-off-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>
2023-09-26tests/shell: Fix shellcheck issues in tests/shell/stat+shadow_stat.sh tetscaseAthira Rajeev
Running shellcheck on stat+shadow_stat.sh generates below warning In tests/shell/stat+csv_summary.sh line 26: while read _num _event _run _pct ^--^ SC2034: _num appears unused. Verify use (or export if used externally). ^----^ SC2034: _event appears unused. Verify use (or export if used externally). ^--^ SC2034: _run appears unused. Verify use (or export if used externally). ^--^ SC2034: _pct appears unused. Verify use (or export if used externally). This variable is intentionally unused since it is needed to parse through the output. commit used "_" as a prefix for this throw away variable. But this stil shows warning with shellcheck v0.6. Fix this by only using "_" instead of prefix and variable name. 2023-09-21perf test stat+shadow_stat.sh: Add threshold for rounding errorsVeronika Molnarova
The test was failing in specific scenarios due to imperfection of FP arithmetics. The `bc` command wasn't correctly rounding the result of division causing the failure. Replace the `bc` with `awk` which should work with more decimal places and add a threshold to catch any possible rounding errors. The acceptable rounding error is set to 0.01 when the test passes with a warning message. 2023-06-13perf tests stat+shadow_stat.sh: Fix all POSIX sh warnings found using shellcheckSpoorthy S
Running shellcheck -S on stat+shadow_stat.sh testcase, generates SC2046 and SC2034 warnings, $ shellcheck -S warning tests/shell/stat+shadow_stat.sh res=`printf "%.2f" $(echo "scale=6; $num / $cyc" | bc -q)` : Quote this to prevent word splitting To address the POSIX shell warnings used quotes in the printf expressions, to prevent word splitting. 2021-04-29perf tests: Skip 'perf stat metrics (shadow stat) test' for hybridJin Yao
Currently we don't support shadow stat for hybrid. root@ssp-pwrt-002:~# ./perf stat -e cycles, instructions -a -- sleep 1 Performance counter stats for 'system wide': 12,883,109,591 cpu_core/cycles/ 6,405,163,221 cpu_atom/cycles/ 555,553,778 cpu_core/instructions/ 841,158,734 cpu_atom/instructions/ 1.002644773 seconds time elapsed Now there is no shadow stat 'insn per cycle' reported. We will support it later and now just skip the 'perf stat metrics (shadow stat) test'. 2020-11-30perf test: Add shadow stat testNamhyung Kim
It calculates IPC from the cycles and instruction counts and compares it with the shadow stat for both global aggregation (default) and no aggregation mode. $ perf stat -a -A -e cycles, instructions sleep 1 Performance counter stats for 'system wide': CPU0 39,580,880 cycles CPU1 45,426,945 cycles CPU2 31,151,685 cycles CPU3 55,167,421 cycles CPU0 17,073,564 instructions # 0.43 insn per cycle CPU1 34,955,764 instructions # 0.77 insn per cycle CPU2 15,688,459 instructions # 0.50 insn per cycle CPU3 34,699,217 instructions # 0.63 insn per cycle 1.003275495 seconds time elapsed In this example, the 'insn per cycle' should be matched to the number for each cpu. For CPU2, 0.50 = 15,688,459 / 31,151,685 .
