2023-11-24drm: Disable the cursor plane on atomic contexts with virtualized driversZack Rusin
Cursor planes on virtualized drivers have special meaning and require that the clients handle them in specific ways, e.g. the cursor plane should react to the mouse movement the way a mouse cursor would be expected to and the client is required to set hotspot properties on it in order for the mouse events to be routed correctly. This breaks the contract as specified by the "universal planes". Fix it by disabling the cursor planes on virtualized drivers while adding a foundation on top of which it's possible to special case mouse cursor planes for clients that want it. Disabling the cursor planes makes some kms compositors which were broken, e.g. Weston, fallback to software cursor which works fine or at least better than currently while having no effect on others, e.g. gnome-shell or kwin, which put virtualized drivers on a deny-list when running in atomic context to make them fallback to legacy kms and avoid this issue. 2023-10-06drm/qxl: Use pci_is_vga() to identify VGA devicesSui Jingfeng
Use pci_is_vga() to identify VGA devices instead of a private is_vga() function. This means qxl will use the VGA arbiter for old PCI_CLASS_NOT_DEFINED_VGA (0x0001) devices as well as the PCI_CLASS_DISPLAY_VGA (0x0300) devices it recognized previously. This probably doesn't make a difference because qxl_pci_driver doesn't claim PCI_CLASS_NOT_DEFINED_VGA devices by default, so it's mainly a code simplification. 2023-09-21drm: Call drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at shutdown time for misc driversDouglas Anderson
Based on grepping through the source code these drivers appear to be missing a call to drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at system shutdown time. Among other things, this means that if a panel is in use that it won't be cleanly powered off at system shutdown time. The fact that we should call drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() in the case of OS shutdown/restart comes straight out of the kernel doc "driver instance overview" in drm_drv.c. All of the drivers in this patch were fairly straightforward to fix since they already had a call to drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at remove/unbind time but were just lacking one at system shutdown. The only hitch is that some of these drivers use the component model to register/unregister their DRM devices. The shutdown callback is part of the original device. The typical solution here, based on how other DRM drivers do this, is to keep track of whether the device is bound based on drvdata. In most cases the drvdata is the drm_device, so we can just make sure it is NULL when the device is not bound. In some drivers, this required minor code changes. To make things simpler, drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() has been modified to consider a NULL drm_device as a noop in the patch ("drm/atomic-helper: drm_atomic_helper_shutdown(NULL) should be a noop"). 2022-09-07drm/qxl: fix the suspend/resume issue on qxl deviceZongmin Zhou
Details: Currently, when trying to suspend and resume with qxl device, there are some error messages after resuming, eventually caused to black screen and can't be recovered. The first error message: [ 64.668577][ C3] [drm] driver is in bug mode This error is due to guest qxl driver will call qxl_reinit_memslots(qdev) during system resume, but didn't call qxl_io_reset(qdev) before this, Then will cause the QXL_IO_MEMSLOT_ADD operation to fail on QEMU, qxl->guest_bug flag will be set,As a result, the QXL device can't communicate with guest qxl driver through the IO port. after fix the first error, can success to resume and login to desktop, but shortly after that will observe the second error message : [ 353.095343][ T863] qxl 0000:00:02.0: object_init failed for (262144, 0x00000001) [ 353.096660][ T863] [drm:qxl_gem_object_create [qxl]] *ERROR* Failed to allocate GEM object (260852, 1, 4096, -12) [ 353.097277][ T863] [drm:qxl_alloc_ioctl [qxl]] *ERROR* qxl_alloc_ioctl: failed to create gem ret=-12 [ 368.197538][ T863] qxl 0000:00:02.0: object_init failed for (3149824, 0x00000001) [ 368.197541][ T863] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO The problem is caused by calling qxl_ring_init_hdr(qdev->release_ring) in qxl_drm_resume() function. When do QXL_IO_RESET,QEMU will call init_qxl_ram(), so params like prod,cons,notify_on_cons and notify_on_prod will be set to default value. Ring push/pop actions for release_ring can be performed normally. But call qxl_ring_init_hdr(qdev->release_ring) will eventually set notify_on_prod to number of QXL_RELEASE_RING_SIZE, affect the value of notify in qxl_push_free_res() function always be false, QEMU will no longer send events of QXL_INTERRUPT_DISPLAY to the guest qxl driver,so qxl_ring_pop() will never been called anymore, and can't do dma_fence_signal(),result to ttm_bo_wait_ctx(bo, ctx) always return EBUSY,fail to call qxl_bo_create(). Test scenario: 1) start virtual machine with qemu command "-device qxl-vga" 2) click suspend botton to enter suspend mode 3) resume and observe the error message in kernel logs, screen will be black Let's fix this by reset io and remove the qxl_ring_init_hdr calling. 2021-11-27drm: Move nomodeset kernel parameter to the DRM subsystemJavier Martinez Canillas
The "nomodeset" kernel cmdline parameter is handled by the vgacon driver but the exported vgacon_text_force() symbol is only used by DRM drivers. It makes much more sense for the parameter logic to be in the subsystem of the drivers that are making use of it. Let's move the vgacon_text_force() function and related logic to the DRM subsystem. While doing that, rename it to drm_firmware_drivers_only() and make it return true if "nomodeset" was used and false otherwise. This is a better description of the condition that the drivers are testing for. 2021-05-07treewide: remove editor modelines and cruftMasahiro Yamada
The section "19) Editor modelines and other cruft" in Documentation/process/coding-style.rst clearly says, "Do not include any of these in source files." I recently receive a patch to explicitly add a new one. Let's do treewide cleanups, otherwise some people follow the existing code and attempt to upstream their favoriate editor setups. It is even nicer if scripts/checkpatch.pl can check it. If we like to impose coding style in an editor-independent manner, I think editorconfig (patch [1]) is a saner solution. 2019-08-23drm/qxl: get vga ioportsGerd Hoffmann
qxl has two modes: "native" (used by the drm driver) and "vga" (vga compatibility mode, typically used for boot display and firmware framebuffers). Accessing any vga ioport will switch the qxl device into vga mode. The qxl driver never does that, but other drivers accessing vga ports can trigger that too and therefore disturb qxl operation. So aquire the legacy vga ioports from vgaarb to avoid that. Reproducer: Boot kvm guest with both qxl and i915 vgpu, with qxl being first in pci scan order. v2: Skip this for secondary qxl cards which don't have vga mode in the first place (Frediano). 2019-01-29drm/irq: Ditch DRIVER_IRQ_SHAREDDaniel Vetter
This is only used by drm_irq_install(), which is an optional helper. For legacy pci devices this is required (due to interrupt sharing without msi/msi-x), and just making this the default exactly matches the behaviour of all existing drivers using the drm_irq_install() helpers. In case that ever becomes wrong drivers can roll their own irq handling, as many drivers already do (for other reasons like needing a threaded interrupt handler, or having an entire pile of different interrupt sources). v2: Rebase v3: Improve commit message (Emil) Cc: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Reviewed-by: Emil Velikov <emil.velikov@collabora.com> Signed-off-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@intel.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20190129104248.26607-3-daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch

2019-01-24drm: Split out drm_probe_helper.hDaniel Vetter
Having the probe helper stuff (which pretty much everyone needs) in the drm_crtc_helper.h file (which atomic drivers should never need) is confusing. Split them out. To make sure I actually achieved the goal here I went through all drivers. And indeed, all atomic drivers are now free of drm_crtc_helper.h includes. v2: Make it compile. There was so much compile fail on arm drivers that I figured I'll better not include any of the acks on v1. v3: Massive rebase because i915 has lost a lot of drmP.h includes, but not all: Through drm_crtc_helper.h > drm_modeset_helper.h -> drmP.h there was still one, which this patch largely removes. Which means rolling out lots more includes all over. This will also conflict with ongoing drmP.h cleanup by others I expect. v3: Rebase on top of atomic bochs. v4: Review from Laurent for bridge/rcar/omap/shmob/core bits: - (re)move some of the added includes, use the better include files in other places (all suggested from Laurent adopted unchanged). - sort alphabetically v5: Actually try to sort them, and while at it, sort all the ones I touch. v6: Rebase onto i915 changes. v7: Rebase once more. 2018-09-05qxl: fix null-pointer crash during suspendPeter Wu
"crtc->helper_private" is not initialized by the QXL driver and thus the "crtc_funcs->disable" call would crash (resulting in suspend failure). During suspend the following message is visible from QEMU: spice/server/display-channel.c:2425:display_channel_validate_surface: canvas address is 0x7fd05da68308 for 0 (and is NULL) spice/server/display-channel.c:2426:display_channel_validate_surface: failed on 0 This seems to be triggered by QXL_IO_NOTIFY_CMD after QXL_IO_DESTROY_PRIMARY_ASYNC, but aside from the warning things still seem to work (tested with both the GTK and -spice options).
