2024-05-07net: annotate writes on dev->mtu from ndo_change_mtu()Eric Dumazet
Simon reported that ndo_change_mtu() methods were never updated to use WRITE_ONCE(dev->mtu, new_mtu) as hinted in commit 501a90c94510 ("inet: protect against too small mtu values.") We read dev->mtu without holding RTNL in many places, with READ_ONCE() annotations. 2023-10-06net: atheros: replace deprecated strncpy with strscpyJustin Stitt
`strncpy` is deprecated for use on NUL-terminated destination strings [1] and as such we should prefer more robust and less ambiguous string interfaces. We expect netdev->name to be NUL-terminated based on its use with format strings and dev_info(): | dev_info(&adapter->pdev->dev, | "%s link is up %d Mbps %s\n", | netdev->name, adapter->link_speed, | adapter->link_duplex == FULL_DUPLEX ? | "full duplex" : "half duplex"); Furthermore, NUL-padding is not required as netdev is already zero-initialized through alloc_etherdev(). 2023-09-20net: ethernet: atheros: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove(). 2023-09-14atl1c: Work around the DMA RX overflow issueSieng-Piaw Liew
This is based on alx driver commit 881d0327db37 ("net: alx: Work around the DMA RX overflow issue"). The alx and atl1c drivers had RX overflow error which was why a custom allocator was created to avoid certain addresses. The simpler workaround then created for alx driver, but not for atl1c due to lack of tester. Instead of using a custom allocator, check the allocated skb address and use skb_reserve() to move away from problematic 0x...fc0 address. Tested on AR8131 on Acer 4540. 2023-07-27net: Explicitly include correct DT includesRob Herring
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. 2023-03-08alx: Drop redundant pci_enable_pcie_error_reporting()Bjorn Helgaas
pci_enable_pcie_error_reporting() enables the device to send ERR_* Messages. Since f26e58bf6f54 ("PCI/AER: Enable error reporting when AER is native"), the PCI core does this for all devices during enumeration, so the driver doesn't need to do it itself. Remove the redundant pci_enable_pcie_error_reporting() call from the driver. Also remove the corresponding pci_disable_pcie_error_reporting() from the driver .remove() path. Note that this only controls ERR_* Messages from the device. An ERR_* Message may cause the Root Port to generate an interrupt, depending on the AER Root Error Command register managed by the AER service driver. 2022-11-07net: remove explicit phylink_generic_validate() referencesRussell King (Oracle)
Virtually all conventional network drivers are now converted to use phylink_generic_validate() - only DSA drivers and fman_memac remain, so lets remove the necessity for network drivers to explicitly set this member, and default to phylink_generic_validate() when unset. This is possible as .validate must currently be set. Any remaining instances that have not been addressed by this patch can be fixed up later. napi_build_skb() reuses NAPI skbuff_head cache in order to save some cycles on freeing/allocating skbuff_heads on every new Rx or completed Tx. Use napi_consume_skb() to feed the cache with skbuff_heads of completed Tx, so it's never empty. Most drivers use "skb_transport_offset(skb) + tcp_hdrlen(skb)" to compute headers length for a TCP packet, but others use more convoluted (but equivalent) ways. 2022-03-11alx: acquire mutex for alx_reinit in alx_change_mtuNiels Dossche
alx_reinit has a lockdep assertion that the alx->mtx mutex must be held. alx_reinit is called from two places: alx_reset and alx_change_mtu. alx_reset does acquire alx->mtx before calling alx_reinit. alx_change_mtu does not acquire this mutex, nor do its callers or any path towards alx_change_mtu. Acquire the mutex in alx_change_mtu. The issue was introduced when the fine-grained locking was introduced to the code to replace the RTNL. The same commit also introduced the lockdep assertion. 2021-12-09net: ag71xx: remove unnecessary legacy methodsRussell King (Oracle)
ag71xx may have a PCS, but it does not appear to support configuration of the PCS in the current code. The functions to get its state merely report that the link is down, and the AN restart function is empty. Since neither of these functions will be called unless phylink's legacy flag is set, we can safely remove these functions and indicate this is a modern driver. Should PCS support be added later, it will need to be modelled using the phylink_pcs support rather than operating as a legacy driver. ag71xx apparently only supports MII port type, which makes it different from other implementations. However, Oleksij says there is no special reason for this. Convert the driver to use phylink_generic_validate(), which will allow all ethtool port linkmodes instead of only MII, giving the driver consistent behaviour with other drivers. Separate these from the few drivers that use ndo_do_ioctl to implement SIOCBOND, SIOCBR and SIOCWANDEV commands.
