2024-04-01ip_tunnel: convert __be16 tunnel flags to bitmapsAlexander Lobakin
Historically, tunnel flags like TUNNEL_CSUM or TUNNEL_ERSPAN_OPT have been defined as __be16. Now all of those 16 bits are occupied and there's no more free space for new flags. It can't be simply switched to a bigger container with no adjustments to the values, since it's an explicit Endian storage, and on LE systems (__be16)0x0001 equals to (__be64)0x0001000000000000. We could probably define new 64-bit flags depending on the Endianness, i.e. (__be64)0x0001 on BE and (__be64)0x00010000... on LE, but that would introduce an Endianness dependency and spawn a ton of Sparse warnings. To mitigate them, all of those places which were adjusted with this change would be touched anyway, so why not define stuff properly if there's no choice. Define IP_TUNNEL_*_BIT counterparts as a bit number instead of the value already coded and a fistful of <16 <-> bitmap> converters and helpers. The two flags which have a different bit position are SIT_ISATAP_BIT and VTI_ISVTI_BIT, as they were defined not as __cpu_to_be16(), but as (__force __be16), i.e. had different positions on LE and BE. Now they both have strongly defined places. Change all __be16 fields which were used to store those flags, to IP_TUNNEL_DECLARE_FLAGS() -> DECLARE_BITMAP(__IP_TUNNEL_FLAG_NUM) -> unsigned long[1] for now, and replace all TUNNEL_* occurrences to their bitmap counterparts. Use the converters in the places which talk to the userspace, hardware (NFP) or other hosts (GRE header). The rest must explicitly use the new flags only. This must be done at once, otherwise there will be too many conversions throughout the code in the intermediate commits. Finally, disable the old __be16 flags for use in the kernel code (except for the two 'irregular' flags mentioned above), to prevent any accidental (mis)use of them. For the userspace, nothing is changed, only additions were made. Most noticeable bloat-o-meter difference (.text): vmlinux: 307/-1 (306) gre.ko: 62/0 (62) ip_gre.ko: 941/-217 (724) [*] ip_tunnel.ko: 390/-900 (-510) [**] ip_vti.ko: 138/0 (138) ip6_gre.ko: 534/-18 (516) [*] ip6_tunnel.ko: 118/-10 (108) [*] gre_flags_to_tnl_flags() grew, but still is inlined [**] ip_tunnel_find() got uninlined, hence such decrease The average code size increase in non-extreme case is 100-200 bytes per module, mostly due to sizeof(long) > sizeof(__be16), as %__IP_TUNNEL_FLAG_NUM is less than %BITS_PER_LONG and the compilers are able to expand the majority of bitmap_*() calls here into direct operations on scalars. 2024-04-01ip_tunnel: use a separate struct to store tunnel params in the kernelAlexander Lobakin
Unlike IPv6 tunnels which use purely-kernel __ip6_tnl_parm structure to store params inside the kernel, IPv4 tunnel code uses the same ip_tunnel_parm which is being used to talk with the userspace. This makes it difficult to alter or add any fields or use a different format for whatever data. Define struct ip_tunnel_parm_kern, a 1:1 copy of ip_tunnel_parm for now, and use it throughout the code. Define the pieces, where the copy user <-> kernel happens, as standalone functions, and copy the data there field-by-field, so that the kernel-side structure could be easily modified later on and the users wouldn't have to care about this. 2024-02-29net: sit: Do not set .ndo_get_stats64Breno Leitao
If the driver is using the network core allocation mechanism, by setting NETDEV_PCPU_STAT_TSTATS, as this driver is, then, it doesn't need to set the dev_get_tstats64() generic .ndo_get_stats64 function pointer. Since the network core calls it automatically, and .ndo_get_stats64 should only be set if the driver needs special treatment. This simplifies the driver, since all the generic statistics is now handled by core. 2024-02-22ipv6/sit: Do not allocate stats in the driverBreno Leitao
With commit 34d21de99cea9 ("net: Move {l,t,d}stats allocation to core and convert veth & vrf"), stats allocation could be done on net core instead of this driver. With this new approach, the driver doesn't have to bother with error handling (allocation failure checking, making sure free happens in the right spot, etc). This is core responsibility now. Remove the allocation in the ipv6/sit driver and leverage the network core allocation. 2023-04-12ipip,ip_tunnel,sit: Add FOU support for externally controlled ipip devicesChristian Ehrig
Today ipip devices in collect-metadata mode don't allow for sending FOU or GUE encapsulated packets. This patch lifts the restriction by adding a struct ip_tunnel_encap to the tunnel metadata. On the egress path, the members of this struct can be set by the bpf_skb_set_fou_encap kfunc via a BPF tc-hook. Instead of dropping packets wishing to use additional UDP encapsulation, ip_md_tunnel_xmit now evaluates the contents of this struct and adds the corresponding FOU or GUE header. Furthermore, it is making sure that additional header bytes are taken into account for PMTU discovery. On the ingress path, an ipip device in collect-metadata mode will fill this struct and a BPF tc-hook can obtain the information via a call to the bpf_skb_get_fou_encap kfunc. The minor change to ip_tunnel_encap, which now takes a pointer to struct ip_tunnel_encap instead of struct ip_tunnel, allows us to control FOU encap type and parameters on a per packet-level. Another syzbot report [1] with no reproducer hints at a bug in ip6_gre tunnel (dev:ip6gretap0) Since ipv6 mcast code makes sure to read dev->mtu once and applies a sanity check on it (see commit b9b312a7a451 "ipv6: mcast: better catch silly mtu values"), a remaining possibility is that a layer is able to set dev->mtu to an underflowed value (high order bit set). This could happen indeed in ip6gre_tnl_link_config_route(), ip6_tnl_link_config() and ipip6_tunnel_bind_dev() Make sure to sanitize mtu value in a local variable before it is written once on dev->mtu, as lockless readers could catch wrong temporary value. 2022-01-12sit: allow encapsulated IPv6 traffic to be delivered locallyIgnat Korchagin
While experimenting with FOU encapsulation Amir noticed that encapsulated IPv6 traffic fails to be delivered, if the peer IP address is configured locally. It can be easily verified by creating a sit interface like below: $ sudo ip link add name fou_test type sit remote 127.0.0.1 encap fou encap-sport auto encap-dport 1111 $ sudo ip link set fou_test up and sending some IPv4 and IPv6 traffic to it $ ping -I fou_test -c 1 1.1.1.1 $ ping6 -I fou_test -c 1 fe80::d0b0:dfff:fe4c:fcbc "tcpdump -i any udp dst port 1111" will confirm that only the first IPv4 ping was encapsulated and attempted to be delivered. This seems like a limitation: for example, in a cloud environment the "peer" service may be arbitrarily scheduled on any server within the cluster, where all nodes are trying to send encapsulated traffic. And the unlucky node will not be able to. Moreover, delivering encapsulated IPv4 traffic locally is allowed. But I may not have all the context about this restriction and this code predates the observable git history. 2021-06-28sit: allow redirecting ip6ip, ipip and mplsip packets to eth devicesGuillaume Nault
Even though sit transports L3 data (IPv6, IPv4 or MPLS) packets, it needs to reset the mac_header pointer, so that other parts of the stack don't mistakenly access the outer header after the packet has been decapsulated. There are two rx handlers to modify: ipip6_rcv() for the ip6ip mode and sit_tunnel_rcv() which is used to re-implement the ipip and mplsip modes of ipip.ko. This allows to push an Ethernet header to sit packets and redirect them to an Ethernet device: $ tc filter add dev sit0 ingress matchall \ action vlan push_eth dst_mac 00:00:5e:00:53:01 \ src_mac 00:00:5e:00:53:00 \ action mirred egress redirect dev eth0 Without this patch, push_eth refuses to add an ethernet header because the skb appears to already have a MAC header. 2021-03-01net: always use icmp{,v6}_ndo_send from ndo_start_xmitJason A. Donenfeld
There were a few remaining tunnel drivers that didn't receive the prior conversion to icmp{,v6}_ndo_send. Knowing now that this could lead to memory corrution (see ee576c47db60 ("net: icmp: pass zeroed opts from icmp{,v6}_ndo_send before sending") for details), there's even more imperative to have these all converted. So this commit goes through the remaining cases that I could find and does a boring translation to the ndo variety. The Fixes: line below is the merge that originally added icmp{,v6}_ ndo_send and converted the first batch of icmp{,v6}_send users. The rationale then for the change applies equally to this patch. It's just that these drivers were left out of the initial conversion because these network devices are hiding in net/ rather than in drivers/net/. 2020-11-09IPv6: Set SIT tunnel hard_header_len to zeroOliver Herms
Due to the legacy usage of hard_header_len for SIT tunnels while already using infrastructure from net/ipv4/ip_tunnel.c the calculation of the path MTU in tnl_update_pmtu is incorrect. This leads to unnecessary creation of MTU exceptions for any flow going over a SIT tunnel. As SIT tunnels do not have a header themsevles other than their transport (L3, L2) headers we're leaving hard_header_len set to zero as tnl_update_pmtu is already taking care of the transport headers sizes. This will also help avoiding unnecessary IPv6 GC runs and spinlock contention seen when using SIT tunnels and for more than net.ipv6.route.gc_thresh flows. 2020-06-30net: sit: implement header_ops->parse_protocol for AF_PACKETJason A. Donenfeld
Sit uses skb->protocol to determine packet type, and bails out if it's not set. For AF_PACKET injection, we need to support its call chain of: packet_sendmsg -> packet_snd -> packet_parse_headers -> dev_parse_header_protocol -> parse_protocol Without a valid parse_protocol, this returns zero, and sit rejects the skb. So, this wires up the ip_tunnel handler for layer 3 packets for that case. Reported-by: Willem de Bruijn <willemdebruijn.kernel@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Jason A. VRF netdev mtu isn't typically set and have an mtu of 65536. When the link of a tunnel is set, the tunnel mtu is changed from 1480 to the link mtu minus tunnel header.
