With all users of bgpio_init() converted to using the modernized generic
GPIO chip API, we can now move the gpio-mmio-specific fields out of
struct gpio_chip and into the dedicated struct gpio_generic_chip. To
that end: adjust the gpio-mmio driver to the new layout, update the
docs, etc.
The changes in gpio-mlxbf2.c and gpio-mpc8xxx.c are here and not in their
respective conversion commits because the former passes the address of
the generic chip's lock to the __releases() annotation and we cannot
really hide it while gpio-mpc8xxx.c accesses the shadow registers in a
driver-specific workaround and there's no reason to make them available
in a public API.
Also: drop the relevant task from TODO as it's now done.

Provide helpers wrapping the read_reg() and write_reg() callbacks of the
generic GPIO API that are called directly by many users. This is done to
hide their implementation ahead of moving them into the separate generic
GPIO struct.

Add request() callback to check if the GPIO descriptor was well registered
in the gpiochip_fwd before using it. This is done to handle the case where
GPIO descriptor is added at runtime in the forwarder.
If at least one GPIO descriptor was not added before the forwarder
registration, we assume the forwarder can sleep as if a GPIO is added at
runtime it may sleep.

Add support to register for GPIO<->pin mapping using a list of non
consecutive pins. The core already supports sparse pin range (pins member
of struct pinctrl_gpio_range), but it was not possible to register one. If
pins is not NULL the core uses it, otherwise it assumes that a consecutive
pin range was registered and it uses pin_base.
The function gpiochip_add_pin_range() which allocates and fills the struct
pinctrl_gpio_range was renamed to gpiochip_add_pin_range_with_pins() and
the pins parameter was added.
Two new functions were added, gpiochip_add_pin_range() and
gpiochip_add_sparse_pin_range() to register a consecutive or sparse pins
range. Both use gpiochip_add_pin_range_with_pins().

The conversion of all GPIO drivers to using the .set_rv() and
.set_multiple_rv() callbacks from struct gpio_chip (which - unlike their
predecessors - return an integer and allow the controller drivers to
indicate failures to users) is now complete and the legacy ones have
been removed. Rename the new callbacks back to their original names in
one sweeping change.

As the first step in removing the fields specific to the gpio-mmio
module from struct gpio_chip, we introduce a new set of generic GPIO
chip interfaces that are meant to replace the existing bgpio_ ones.
The new initialization function - gpio_generic_chip_init() - takes a
configuration structure as argument instead of 9 separate parameters.
This will allow easy extension if needed in the future. We hide the
locking details behind a set of helpers in order to be able to move the
raw spinlock out of struct gpio_chip without the users noticing.
For now, the new APIs just wrap the existing ones. Once all users have
been converted to the new interfaces, we'll pull them into gpio-mmio and
implement them in a backward-compatible way while also moving all fields
specific to the generic GPIO chip into struct gpio_generic_chip.

With no more users, we can now remove struct bgpio_pdata. Move the
relevant bits from bgpio_parse_fw() into bgpio_pdev_probe() while
maintaining the logical ordering (get flags before calling
bgpio_init()).

When using bgpio_init with a gpiochip acting as a GPO (output only), the
gpiochip ops `direction_input` was set to `bgpio_simple_dir_in` by
default but we have no input ability.
Adding this flag allows to set a valid ops for the `direction_output`
ops without setting a valid ops for `direction_input` by default.

"We have three new drivers, some refactoring in the GPIO core, lots of
various changes across many drivers, new configfs interface for the
virtual gpio-aggregator module and DT-bindings updates.
The treewide conversion of GPIO drivers to using the new value setter
callbacks is ongoing with another round of GPIO drivers updated. You
will also see these commits coming in from other subsystems as with
the relevant changes merged into mainline last cycle, I've started
converting GPIO providers located elsewhere than drivers/gpio/.
GPIO core:
- use more lock guards where applicable
- refactor GPIO ACPI code and shrink it in the process by 8%
- move GPIO ACPI quirks into a separate file
- remove unneeded #ifdef
- convert GPIO devres helpers to using devm_add_action() where
applicable which shrinks and simplifies the code
- refactor GPIO descriptor validation in GPIO consumer interfaces
- don't allow setting values on input lines in the GPIO core which
will take off the burden from GPIO drivers of checking this down
the line
- provide gpiod_is_equal() as a way of safely comparing two GPIO
descriptors (the only current user is in regulator core)
New drivers:
- add the GPIO module for the max77759 multifunction device
- add the GPIO driver for the VeriSilicon BLZP1600 GPIO controller
- add the GPIO driver for the Spacemit K1 SoC
Driver improvements:
- convert more drivers to using the new GPIO line value setter
callbacks
- convert more drivers to making the irq_chip immutable as is
recommended by the interrupt subsystem
- extend build testing coverage by enabling more modules to be built
with COMPILE_TEST=y
- extend the gpio-aggregator module with a configfs interface that
makes the setup easier for user-space than the existing
driver-level sysfs attributes and also adds more advanced
configuration features (such as referring to aggregated lines by
their original names or modifying their names as exposed by the
aggregated chip)
- add a missing mutex_destroy() in gpio-imx-scu
- add an OF polarity quirk for s5m8767
- allow building gpio-vf610 as a loadable module
- make gpio-mxc not hardcode its GPIO base number with GPIO SYSFS
interface disabled (another small step towards getting rid of the
global GPIO numberspace)
- add support for level-triggered interrupts to gpio-pca953x
- don't double-check the ngpios property in gpio-ds4520 as GPIO core
already does it
- don't double-check the number of GPIOs in gpio-imx-scu as GPIO core
already does it
- remove unused callbacks from gpio-max3191x
DT bindings:
- add device-tree bindings for max77759, spacemit,k1 and blzp1600
(new drivers added this cycle)

irq_domain_add_*() interfaces are going away as being obsolete now.
Switch to the preferred irq_domain_create_*() ones. Those differ in the
node parameter: They take more generic struct fwnode_handle instead of
struct device_node. Therefore, of_fwnode_handle() is added around the
original parameter.
Note some of the users can likely use dev->fwnode directly instead of
indirect of_fwnode_handle(dev->of_node). But dev->fwnode is not
guaranteed to be set for all, so this has to be investigated on case to
case basis (by people who can actually test with the HW).

There are users in the kernel that directly compare raw GPIO descriptor
pointers in order to determine whether they refer to the same physical
GPIO pin. This accidentally works like this but is not guaranteed by any
API contract. Let's provide a comparator function that hides the actual
logic.

The non-exclusive GPIO request flag looks like a functional feature but
is in fact a workaround for a corner-case that got out of hand. It should
be removed so deprecate it officially so that nobody uses it anymore.

The line_index member in the struct acpi_gpio_params replicates
what is covered in the ACPI GpioIo() or GpioInt() resource.
The value there is limited to 16-bit one, so we don't really need
to have a full 32-bit storage for it. Together with followed
boolean the structure will be smaller.

The valid_mask member of the struct gpio_chip is unconditionally written
by the GPIO core at driver registration. Current documentation does not
mention this but just says the valid_mask is used if it's not NULL. This
lured me to try populating it directly in the GPIO driver probe instead
of using the init_valid_mask() callback. It took some retries with
different bitmaps and eventually a bit of code-reading to understand why
the valid_mask was not obeyed. I could've avoided this trial and error if
the valid_mask was hidden in the struct gpio_device instead of being a
visible member of the struct gpio_chip.
Help the next developer who decides to directly populate the valid_mask
in struct gpio_chip by hiding the valid_mask in struct gpio_device and
keep it internal to the GPIO core.

The valid_mask member of the struct gpio_chip is unconditionally written
by the GPIO core at driver registration. It shouldn't be directly
populated by drivers. This can be prevented by moving it from the struct
gpio_chip to struct gpio_device, which is internal to the GPIO core.
As a preparatory step, provide a getter function which can be used by
those drivers which need the valid_mask information.

When describing GPIO controllers in the device tree, the ambition
of device tree to describe the hardware may require a three-cell
scheme:

This implements support for this scheme in the gpiolib OF core.
Drivers that want to handle multiple gpiochip instances from one
OF node need to implement a callback similar to this to
determine if a certain gpio chip is a pointer to the right

Rename the "simple" of_xlate function to "twocell" which is closer
to what it actually does.
In the device tree bindings, the provide node needs

We now have setter callbacks that allow us to indicate success or
failure using the integer return value. Deprecate the older callbacks so
that no new code is tempted to use them.

Add new variants of the set() and set_multiple() callbacks that have
integer return values allowing to indicate failures to users of the GPIO
consumer API. Until we convert all GPIO providers treewide to using
them, they will live in parallel to the existing ones.
Make sure that providers cannot define both. Prefer the new ones and
only use the old ones as fallback.

Change the in-kernel consumer interface for GPIOs: make all variants of
value setters that don't have a return value, return a signed integer
instead. That will allow these routines to indicate failures to callers.
This doesn't change the implementation just yet, we'll do it in
subsequent commits.
We need to update the gpio-latch module as it passes the address of
value setters as a function pointer argument and thus cares about its
type.

Andy suggested we should keep a fine-grained scheme for includes and
only pull in stuff required within individual ifdef sections. Let's
revert commit dea69f2d1cc8 ("gpiolib: move all includes to the top of
gpio/consumer.h") and make the headers situation even more fine-grained
by only including the first level headers containing requireded symbols
except for bug.h where checkpatch.pl warns against including asm/bug.h.

It turns out that with this flag we can switch over an entire
driver to use gpio-mmio instead of a bunch of custom code,
also providing get/set_multiple() to it in the process, so it
seems like a reasonable feature to add.
The generic pin control backend requires us to call the
gpiochip_generic_request(), gpiochip_generic_free(),
pinctrl_gpio_direction_output() and pinctrl_gpio_direction_input()
callbacks, so if the new flag for a pin control back-end
is set, we make sure these functions get called as
expected.

user-space. If a bad driver returns a positive number, it may confuse
user programs. Tighten the API contract and check for positive numbers
returned by GPIO controllers.

Hardware timestamping is only used on tegra186 platforms but we include
the code and export the symbols everywhere. Shrink the binary a bit by
compiling the relevant functions conditionally.

We have several conditional includes depending on !CONFIG_GPIOLIB. This
is supposed to reduce compilation time with CONFIG_GPIOLIB=y but in
practice there's no difference on modern machines. It makes adding new
stubs that depend on more than just GPIOLIB harder so move them all to
the top, unduplicate them and replace asm/ with preferred linux/
alternatives.

The whole purpose of the custom CLASS() is to have possibility
to initialise the counter variable _i to 0. This can't be done
with simple __free() macro as it will be not allowed by C language.
OTOH, the CLASS() operates with the pointers and explicit usage of
the scoped variable _data is not needed, since the pointers are kept
the same over the iterations. Simplify the implementation of
for_each_hwgpio_in_range().

Refactor for_each_requested_gpio_in_range() to deduplicate some code
which is basically repeats the for_each_hwgpio(). In order to achieve
this, split the latter to two, for_each_hwgpio_in_range() and
for_each_hwgpio().

Add a new gpiod_multi_set_value_cansleep() helper function with fewer
parameters than gpiod_set_array_value_cansleep().
Calling gpiod_set_array_value_cansleep() can get quite verbose. In many
cases, the first arguments all come from the same struct gpio_descs, so
having a separate function where we can just pass that cuts down on the
boilerplate.

This function has been deprecated for some time and is now only used
within the GPIOLIB core. Remove it from the public header and unexport
it as all current users are linked against the compilation unit where
it is defined.

GPIO chips should be added with driver-private data associated with the
chip. If none is needed, NULL can be used. All users already do this
except one, fix that here. With no more users of the base gpiochip_add()
we can drop this function so no more users show up later.

pull-request is relatively small.
We have one new driver, some minor improvements to the GPIO core code
and across several drivers, some DT and documentation updates but in
