It is desireable to push the hardware accelerator to also process non-segmented TCP frames: we pass the skb->len to the "TOE/TSO" offloader and it will handle them. Without this quirk the driver becomes unstable and lock up and and crash. I do not know exactly why, but it is probably due to the TOE (TCP offload engine) feature that is coupled with the segmentation feature - it is not possible to turn one part off and not the other, either both TOE and TSO are active, or neither of them. Not having the TOE part active seems detrimental, as if that hardware feature is not really supposed to be turned off. The datasheet says: "Based on packet parsing and TCP connection/NAT table lookup results, the NetEngine puts the packets belonging to the same TCP connection to the same queue for the software to process. The NetEngine puts incoming packets to the buffer or series of buffers for a jumbo packet. With this hardware acceleration, IP/TCP header parsing, checksum validation and connection lookup are offloaded from the software processing." After numerous tests with the hardware locking up after something between minutes and hours depending on load using iperf3 I have concluded this is necessary to stabilize the hardware. In fact, these two are not tied closely to each other. The only requirements to GRO are to use it in the BH context and have some sane limits on the packet batches, e.g. NAPI has a limit of its budget (64/8/etc.). Move purely GRO fields into a new structure, &gro_node. Embed it into &napi_struct and adjust all the references. gro_node::cached_napi_id is effectively the same as napi_struct::napi_id, but to be used on GRO hotpath to mark skbs. napi_struct::napi_id is now a fully control path field. Three Ethernet drivers use napi_gro_flush() not really meant to be exported, so move it to <net/gro.h> and add that include there. napi_gro_receive() is used in more than 100 drivers, keep it in <linux/netdevice.h>. This does not make GRO ready to use outside of the NAPI context yet. An earlier commit deleted the TSO support in the Cortina Gemini driver because the driver was confusing gso_size and MTU, probably because what the Linux kernel calls "gso_size" was called "MTU" in the datasheet. Restore the functionality properly reading the gso_size from the skbuff. As can be seen, the ethernet frames are 0x05ea (1514) in size. Performance with iperf3 before this patch: ~15.5 Mbit/s Performance with iperf3 after this patch: ~175 Mbit/s This was running a 60 second test (twice) the best measurement was 179 Mbit/s. For comparison if I run iperf3 with UDP I get around 1.05 Mbit/s both before and after this patch. While this is a gigabit ethernet interface, the CPU is a cheap D-Link DIR-685 router (based on the ARMv5 Faraday FA526 at ~50 MHz), and the software is not supposed to drive traffic, as the device has a DSA chip, so this kind of numbers can be expected. The recent change to allow large frames without hardware checksumming slotted in software checksumming in the driver if hardware could not do it. This will however upset TSO (TCP Segment Offloading). Typical error dumps includes this: skb len=2961 headroom=222 headlen=66 tailroom=0 (...) WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 956 at net/core/dev.c:3259 skb_warn_bad_offload+0x7c/0x108 gemini-ethernet-port: caps=(0x0000010000154813, 0x00002007ffdd7889) And the packets do not go through. The TSO implementation is bogus: a TSO enabled driver must propagate the skb_shinfo(skb)->gso_size value to the TSO engine on the NIC. Drop the size check and TSO offloading features for now: this needs to be fixed up properly. After this ethernet works fine on Gemini devices with a direct connected PHY such as D-Link DNS-313. Also tested to still be working with a DSA switch using the Gemini ethernet as conduit interface. The RX max frame size is over 10000 for the Gemini ethernet, but the TX max frame size is actually just 2047 (0x7ff after checking the datasheet). Reflect this in what we offer to Linux, cap the MTU at the TX max frame minus ethernet headers. We delete the code disabling the hardware checksum for large MTUs as netdev->mtu can no longer be larger than netdev->max_mtu meaning the if()-clause in gmac_fix_features() is never true. The Gemini ethernet controller provides hardware checksumming for frames up to 1514 bytes including ethernet headers but not FCS. (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 32653, offset 0, flags [DF], proto ICMP (1), length 1502) OpenWrt.lan > Fecusia: ICMP echo request, id 1672, seq 50, length 1482 If we bypass the hardware checksumming and provide a software fallback, everything starts working fine up to the max TX MTU of 2047 bytes, for example ping -s2000 192.168.1.2: 00:44:29.587598 bc:ae:c5:6b:a8:3d (oui Unknown) > 14:d6:4d:a8:3c:4f (oui Unknown), ethertype IPv4 (0x0800), length 2042: (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 51828, offset 0, flags [none], proto ICMP (1), length 2028) Fecusia > OpenWrt.lan: ICMP echo reply, id 1683, seq 4, length 2008 The bit enabling to bypass hardware checksum (or any of the "TSS" bits) are undocumented in the hardware reference manual. The entire hardware checksum unit appears undocumented. The conclusion that we need to use the "bypass" bit was found by trial-and-error. Since no hardware checksum will happen, we slot in a software checksum fallback. Check for the condition where we need to compute checksum on the skb with either hardware or software using == CHECKSUM_PARTIAL instead of != CHECKSUM_NONE which is an incomplete check according to <linux/skbuff.h>. On the D-Link DIR-685 router this fixes a bug on the conduit interface to the RTL8366RB DSA switch: as the switch needs to add space for its tag it increases the MTU on the conduit interface to 1504 and that means that when the router sends packages of 1500 bytes these get an extra 4 bytes of DSA tag and the transfer fails because of the erroneous hardware checksumming, affecting such basic functionality as the LuCI web interface. The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. This change finally makes the drivers/net/ethernet tree compile with W=1 set on the command line.
